Berlin, December 12 – The Rotes Rathaus, Berlin’s historic city hall, has unveiled a new permanent exhibition titled “Berlin Unpacks – Gifts from 75 Years,” featuring approximately 500 diplomatic gifts received from international politicians, royalty, and celebrities over the past 75 years. The exhibition, which opened today, offers a unique glimpse into the city’s rich history of international relations.
Exhibition Inaugurated by Governing Mayor
The exhibition was officially opened by Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU). During his opening remarks, Mayor Wegner emphasized the significance of these gifts as symbols of friendship and diplomatic exchange. The public can view the exhibition free of charge during the Rotes Rathaus’s opening hours, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
A Treasure Trove from the Town Hall Attic
Many of the items on display had previously been stored in the town hall attic for extended periods, making their public debut a significant event. The collection spans more than seven decades, offering a comprehensive overview of Berlin’s interactions with global figures.
Curated by the Berlin City Museum
The Berlin City Museum meticulously curated the exhibition. Due to incomplete documentation over the years, many gifts could not be attributed to specific visitors or exact visit dates. Consequently, the exhibits are primarily organized by country of origin, providing a thematic rather than chronological presentation.
Highlights of the Collection
Among the most striking displays is a collection of artistic pieces crafted from real gold, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship and value of some of the diplomatic offerings. Another notable highlight is the diverse array of Berlin bear figurines, presented in various forms and styles by visiting dignitaries. These bears, a symbol of Berlin, offer a charming and sometimes whimsical insight into the city’s international appeal.
A Glimpse into Current Diplomatic Exchange
In addition to historical artifacts, one of the display cases features a rotating selection of more recent gifts, ensuring the exhibition remains current and reflective of ongoing diplomatic activity. This dynamic element allows visitors to see the evolution of diplomatic gift-giving and Berlin’s contemporary international relationships.
Educational and Cultural Significance
The exhibition serves not only as a display of unique artifacts but also as an educational resource, illustrating the customs and traditions of diplomatic exchange. It underscores the importance of cultural diplomacy in fostering international understanding and cooperation. The diverse range of gifts, from intricate gold creations to playful bear statues, tells a story of global connections and shared history.
