Berlin, December 13, 2025 – After 30 years of extensive planning, numerous setbacks, and significant construction efforts, the new Dresdner Bahn line is set to commence regular operations this Sunday, December 15. This long-awaited infrastructure project promises to revolutionize rail travel between Berlin and Dresden, and significantly improve connectivity to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER).

Historic Opening After Three Decades

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) acknowledged the protracted development of the project, stating, “This project has taken a long time.” Indeed, preparations for the Dresdner Bahn were initiated as far back as 1991, according to Peter Schulze from Deutsche Bahn, highlighting the monumental scale and complexity of the undertaking. The entire project has come with a price tag exceeding €1 billion.

Faster Connections to Dresden and BER

The new line will offer a substantially faster route to Dresden, reducing the travel time between the two cities to a mere 99 minutes. This impressive reduction is achieved even with the inclusion of additional stops along the way, such as Zossen and Rangsdorf, demonstrating the efficiency of the new infrastructure.

Perhaps even more impactful for daily commuters and travelers will be the expedited journey to Berlin Brandenburg Airport. An express service, running four times an hour from Sunday, will dramatically cut the travel time. “The travel time from the main station to the airport decreases from 39 to 22 minutes,” announced Transport Senator Ute Bonde (CDU).

The Airport Curve: Key to Enhanced Speed

A crucial element enabling this increased speed to the airport is the so-called airport curve. This specialized junction, located just behind the city border, provides a direct link to BER, bypassing previous, more circuitous routes. The first passenger train on this new route is scheduled to depart from Südkreuz at 1:43 am on Sunday, marking a new era of connectivity for the region.

A Milestone for Berlin and Brandenburg

Alexander Schirp, CEO of UVB, hailed the opening of the Dresdner Bahn as “a holiday for Berlin and Brandenburg,” underscoring the broad regional significance of this project. The enhanced transport links are expected to boost economic activity, improve accessibility, and offer greater convenience for residents and visitors alike.

The completion of the Dresdner Bahn represents a triumph of perseverance and engineering, promising to reshape the travel landscape of the German capital region for decades to come.
