Hamburg, December 24 – Public transport services in Hamburg are operating on a reduced special timetable throughout the Christmas holidays. Passengers using U-Bahns, S-Bahns, and buses should be aware of altered schedules and frequencies, particularly on Christmas Eve.
Christmas Eve: U-Bahn and S-Bahn Services
On Christmas Eve, U-Bahns and S-Bahns initially follow a Saturday schedule. However, from 6 PM onwards, services will be reduced to a 20-minute interval. The U3 ring line will maintain a 10-minute frequency. The U4 line will only operate between Elbbrücken and Jungfernstieg from 12 PM.
For the S3/S5 lines, the usual five-minute frequency will shift to a 10-minute interval around 2:30 PM. From 6:30 PM, the S-Bahn service between Neugraben and Stade will be reduced to an hourly schedule.
Bus Services on Christmas Eve
Buses will also run on a Saturday schedule from the start of service until 2 PM on Christmas Eve. Subsequently, many lines will transition to a special timetable throughout the afternoon. Passengers are advised to check individual line schedules for specific changes.
First and Second Christmas Day: Sunday Schedule Applies
On both the First and Second Christmas Day (December 25th and 26th), a Sunday timetable will be in effect for all public transport services. Despite the reduced daytime services, the usual continuous night service for rapid transit (U-Bahns and S-Bahns) and supplementary bus lines will be available during the nights leading into December 25th and 26th.
Impact on Holiday Travel and Other Services
These adjustments to the HVV (Hamburg Public Transport Association) schedule are crucial for residents and visitors planning their travel during the festive period. While public transport is scaled back, it remains an essential mode of transport for many. The news comes as earlier traffic forecasts by ADAC for the days leading up to Christmas did not materialize in significant congestion, though increased traffic is anticipated for the last weekend of the year.
In addition to transport, other aspects of holiday life in Hamburg are also affected. Information regarding open shops and emergency services during the holidays is being provided to assist the public. The city is also preparing for hundreds of Christmas church services, with St. Michaelis Church alone hosting five services on Christmas Eve.
These comprehensive changes aim to manage public transport efficiently during a period of reduced demand and ensure essential services are maintained while allowing staff to observe the holidays.
