Munich, Bavaria, Germany – The Munich police department reported on Tuesday that it responded to two incidents with far-right connections over the weekend. The events, which included an attempted assault in one instance, occurred in Schellingstrasse and a restaurant near Marienplatz. Investigations are ongoing, and police have issued a call for witnesses.
Incidents in Schellingstrasse and Marienplatz
In the first incident, which took place in the early hours of Saturday around 1:00 AM, a group of approximately ten individuals allegedly threatened a group of four 24-year-olds in Schellingstrasse. According to reports, one man from the larger group shouted far-right slogans and performed the Hitler salute. Another person from the same group, who also uttered xenophobic remarks, reportedly threw a glass bottle that shattered without hitting the victims.
Upon the arrival of officers, the group of ten had already fled and could not be located by several patrol units. The police are now appealing for witnesses to provide information about this group of men, estimated to be between 18 and 25 years old, who were reportedly seen in Schellingstrasse and the intersecting Ludwigsstrasse on the night of the incident. All the men were described as wearing bomber jackets.
Far-Right Slogans in a Restaurant
The second incident occurred on Saturday evening in a restaurant at Marienplatz. Police stated that a 41-year-old German man and a 39-year-old German man were heard shouting slogans with “xenophobic content and references to National Socialism” throughout the establishment. A restaurant employee, alerted by guests, contacted the police.
Both men have since been released but face charges for using symbols of unconstitutional organizations. Additionally, blood samples were taken from them at the Institute for Forensic Medicine as part of the ongoing investigation.
The investigations into both incidents are being handled by Commissioner 44. The Munich Police Department urges anyone with information regarding the group in Schellingstrasse to contact them at 089 2910-0.
