In a series of alarming incidents across Munich on New Year’s Eve, several apartments were significantly damaged by explosive devices. The detonations occurred between 10:30 PM on December 31, 2025, and 12:15 AM on January 1, 2026, as confirmed by a police press release. While the material damage is considerable, authorities have reported no injuries.

Incidents Across the City

The first reported incident took place in Berg am Laim, where a resident heard a loud bang at her apartment door. She discovered a hole in the door panel, and the stairwell of the multi-family building was filled with smoke. Initial police findings suggest that unknown perpetrators had attached an explosive device to the door. Police secured evidence and launched an investigation.

Approximately 40 minutes later, another explosive detonated in an apartment in Riem. This blast completely shattered a kitchen window, sending glass fragments throughout the apartment. Fortunately, no one was harmed in this incident either.

Shortly after midnight, a resident in Schwanthaler Höhe reported a hole in his neighbor’s apartment door and a triggered smoke detector. The stairwell was also smoky. According to preliminary investigations, unknown individuals had placed an explosive device on the neighbor’s door before fleeing the scene.

Police Seek Witnesses

The estimated damage in the first and third cases amounts to several thousand euros, while the second case incurred several hundred euros in damage. The investigations are being led by Commissioner 13.

The police are appealing to witnesses who may have observed anything suspicious between 10:30 PM on December 31, 2025, and 12:15 AM on January 1, 2026, in the following areas: Berg am Laim (Altöttinger Straße, Schlüsselbergstraße, Simbacher Straße), Riem (Elisabeth-Mann-Borgese-Straße, Heinrich-Böll-Straße, Maria-Montessori-Straße), and Schwanthaler Höhe (Tulbeckstraße, Ganghoferstraße, Ligsalzstraße). Witnesses are urged to contact the Munich Police Department, Commissioner 13, at Tel. 089 2910-0, or any other police station.

These incidents occurred despite existing firework restrictions in Munich. For New Year’s Eve 2025/2026, the city implemented a complete firework ban in the Old Town pedestrian zone, including Marienplatz and Stachus, as well as at Viktualienmarkt, from 9:00 PM on December 31, 2025, to 2:00 AM on January 1, 2026. Furthermore, a ban on pyrotechnics with exclusive bang effects (e.g., firecrackers) was in effect all day on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026, within the Mittlerer Ring environmental zone. A new firework ban was also introduced around the Hellabrunn Zoo to protect animals [abendzeitung-muenchen.de](https://www.abendzeitung-muenchen.de/muenchen/silvester-feuerwerk-was-in-muenchen-erlaubt-ist-und-was-nicht-art-460180) [abendzeitung-muenchen.de](https://www.abendzeitung-muenchen.de/muenchen/viele-bayerische-staedte-mit-verbotszonen-zu-silvester-art-1099728) [stadt.muenchen.de](https://stadt.muenchen.de/news/feuerwerk.html) [polizei.bayern.de](https://www.polizei.bayern.de/aktuelles/pressemitteilungen/096119/index.html) [tz.de](https://www.tz.de/muenchen/stadt/muenchen-das-sind-die-regeln-2025-silvester-boellerverbot-in-94097750.html).
