Munich Experiences Unprecedented Demand for Crisis Preparedness Courses After Berlin Blackout

Munich, January 11 – Following a multi-day power outage in Berlin, the Medical Catastrophe Relief of Germany (MHW) in Munich has reported an unprecedented surge in public interest for its crisis preparedness courses. The organization, which provides practical tips for self-sufficiency during emergencies, has been inundated with inquiries from across the country.

“For several days now, we have been receiving hundreds of messages from all over Germany,” stated Matthias Fischer, spokesperson and course instructor at MHW, to the German Press Agency. This influx of interest underscores a growing awareness among the populace regarding the importance of emergency preparedness.

Run on Crisis Knowledge

The inquiries primarily concern topics such as cooking without electricity, emergency food supplies, and battery solutions. However, the most significant demand is for MHW’s free crisis courses offered in Bavaria, for which there is no comparable nationwide program. “The most common question is when the next course will take place,” Fischer added. The MHW is currently exploring options to expand its course offerings, including the development of an online platform.

The ultimate goal is to establish these courses nationwide, potentially in collaboration with other organizations. “The population must become resilient, resistant to crises and catastrophes,” Fischer emphasized, also highlighting the political responsibility to provide such opportunities for citizens.

Survival with Improvised Means

The solutions promoted by the MHW are simple and practical. For instance, a tent set up in the living room can provide warmth during a power outage, even in a high-rise apartment in a major city. Camping equipment, such as a camping stove and a crank flashlight, can serve as vital survival tools during a blackout.

A gas stove with a 230-gram cartridge can operate for approximately two hours, sufficient for preparing hot tea or simple meals like pasta. Therefore, the MHW recommends stocking easily prepared foods such as couscous for emergency provisions. Drinking water can also be obtained from rainwater using simple sand filters if necessary.

Camping Instead of Comfort Zone

For lighting, solar lamps or, even better, crank flashlights are recommended, as they can generate light at any time, even with a dead battery. Crank radios with integrated flashlights and solar panels are widely available in electronics stores. Some devices can even function as power banks for charging mobile phones. Generally, exploring camping gear can provide valuable resources for emergency preparedness.

The courses also educate participants about official warning channels and reliable sources of information during emergencies. MHW spokesperson Fischer warns that misinformation and fake news can proliferate during crises, making it crucial to rely on verified sources.

The renewed focus on crisis preparedness comes after the extensive power outage in Berlin, which highlighted vulnerabilities in urban infrastructure. The MHW’s efforts aim to empower citizens with the knowledge and skills to navigate such challenging situations effectively, contributing to a more resilient society.
