Munich S-Bahn Disruptions: What Passengers Need to Know for the Coming Weeks

Munich S-Bahn passengers must prepare for significant disruptions in the coming weeks. Extensive construction work for the second main line will repeatedly bring the network to a standstill. The German railway (DB) announced that the impairments will primarily occur on weekends and during night hours. The main line will be particularly affected.

Main Line Disruptions (Pasing – Donnersbergerbrücke)

  • Period: January 13 to February 13, 2026
  • Impact: Replacement services during numerous nights between Pasing and Donnersbergerbrücke.
  • Further Restrictions: From 10:20 PM to 5:00 AM, fewer lines will run through the rest of the main line section.

Airport Line S8 (Ostbahnhof – Johanneskirchen) Severely Affected

The important S8 airport line between Ostbahnhof and Johanneskirchen is also heavily impacted by the construction measures. Travelers must expect significant delays and diversions here.

Reduced Service on Main Line (Weekends)

  • Period: Three consecutive weekends between January 24 and February 8, 2026
  • Impact: Drastically reduced S-Bahn service.
  • Weekend Schedule: On Saturdays and Sundays, from 4:00 AM to 4:00 PM, fewer lines will operate on the main line than usual.
  • Replacement Service: Between Ostbahnhof and Trudering, passengers must completely switch to replacement services.

Alternative Connections

The DB announced: “The S6 Tutzing will be connected with the S8 Airport and will operate as the only continuous line through the entire main line.” The S7 will run as usual. As an alternative, the railway recommends passengers switch to U-Bahn or regional trains.

Massive Problems on Airport Route (Leuchtenbergring – Daglfing)

Even greater restrictions are caused by work between Leuchtenbergring and Daglfing.

  • Affected Weekends:
    • January 17/18, 2026
    • February 28/March 1, 2026
    • March 7/8, 2026
    • March 14/15, 2026
  • Impact: Continuous bus replacement service from Friday evening 10:30 PM to Monday morning 4:30 AM between Ostbahnhof and Johanneskirchen.
  • Exception: On Sunday, March 8, the replacement service will only run until 9:15 PM.
  • Bus Frequency: Buses will run every 20 minutes.
  • Alternative for Airport Travelers: The DB recommends: “Travelers to the airport should use the S1.”

Further Construction Work

In addition to the major construction sites mentioned, further work is planned on the main line and in the outer areas in the coming weeks, especially during night hours.

How to Stay Informed

  • Detailed Timetable Changes: Passengers can find details on all timetable changes on the S-Bahn Munich website.
  • Fastest Connection: Passengers can determine the fastest connection to their destination using the timetable information in the apps, on the internet, or at ticket machines. The railway assured: “All timetable changes are included there.”
