New Bicycle Parking Garage Opens at Munich Central Station
Munich, January 12, 2026 – A new bicycle parking garage has officially opened at Munich Central Station, located on Marsstrasse with access from Hirtenstrasse. This facility aims to significantly improve the bicycle parking situation in the area, making it more functional, secure, and organized during the ongoing extensive construction work at the Central Station.
The construction projects at Munich Central Station, including the second S-Bahn main line and the reconstruction of the reception building and the Starnberger Flügelbahnhof, have had a considerable impact on bicycle traffic and parking availability. To compensate for the loss of existing bicycle parking spaces, the Mobility Department developed a concept for at least 1,000 new bicycle parking spaces, which was approved by the city council in February 2025. The newly opened bicycle parking garage on Hirtenstrasse/Marsstrasse is a central component of this initiative.
Features and Future Plans
The ground floor of the Marsstrasse car park now offers 256 bicycle parking spaces, including three designated for cargo or special bicycles. This service is primarily aimed at commuters using the Central Station and is free of charge, open 24 hours a day, and equipped with video surveillance for enhanced security. Additionally, a publicly accessible building passage between Arnulfstrasse and Hirtenstrasse provides a direct route from the bicycle parking garage to the platforms of the Starnberger Flügelbahnhof.
Further parking facilities are planned to follow. In 2027, a bicycle garage with over 300 spaces is expected to open in the pedestrian underpass at the intersection of Arnulfstrasse and Seidlstrasse. Upon completion of all major construction works, additional bicycle garages and parking facilities are planned for the immediate vicinity of the station.
Enhancing Intermodal Mobility and Safety
With these new bicycle parking options, the city of Munich aims to offer travelers, commuters, and all visitors to the Central Station a secure and weather-protected place to store their bicycles. This initiative is crucial for supporting the increasing share of bicycle traffic and promoting intermodal mobility, which combines different modes of transport.
Moreover, these designated parking areas are intended to prevent bicycles from being obstructively parked on sidewalks. This will contribute to greater safety, particularly for pedestrians navigating the area around the Central Station with prams, luggage, rollators, and similar aids, ensuring smoother passage for everyone.
The opening of this new facility marks a significant step in Munich’s ongoing efforts to enhance its urban mobility infrastructure, making cycling a more convenient and integral part of the city’s transport network.
