Munich Reverts to 50 km/h Speed Limit on Mittlerer Ring

Munich, Bavaria, Germany, January 14, 2026 – The city of Munich has reinstated a 50 km/h speed limit on a 2.5-kilometer stretch of the Mittlerer Ring, specifically along the Landshuter Allee. This decision, announced last week by Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD), comes after approximately 18 months of a 30 km/h restriction, which was implemented to improve air quality. The signage indicating the previous lower speed limit has been removed and replaced.

Background: Speed Limit vs. Diesel Ban

The history of the speed limit on this section of the Mittlerer Ring is intertwined with efforts to reduce air pollution in Munich. Since February 1, 2023, a driving ban for diesel vehicles with emission standard Euro 4 and worse has been in effect within Munich’s environmental zone, including the Mittlerer Ring. However, the Bavarian Administrative Court (VGH), following a lawsuit by the German Environmental Aid (Deutsche Umwelthilfe) and the German Transport Club (Verkehrsclub Deutschland), ruled that these measures were insufficient. The VGH demanded that the city extend the ban to include Euro 5 diesel vehicles.
