Berlin, January 15 – Galeria, Berlin’s largest department store located at Alexanderplatz, has secured its lease until January 2026, providing a temporary reprieve for the iconic shopping institution and its 224 employees. This development comes amidst an uncertain future for the store, which has been a fixture in the city for 55 years.
Lease Extension Offers Short-Term Security
The confirmation that Galeria’s lease will no longer expire at the end of August 2025 means that the jobs of its 224 employees are safe for at least another year. Built between 1967 and 1970 as part of the Alexanderplatz redesign, Galeria represents a significant piece of Berlin’s shopping tradition, dating back to its opening in East Berlin.
In December alone, the store attracted 413,000 shoppers, highlighting its continued importance as a retail hub in the city. The extension of the lease offers a crucial window for further negotiations and strategic planning regarding the store’s long-term viability.
Central State Libraries (ZLB) Negotiations Continue
Despite the lease extension, Galeria’s ultimate survival is intertwined with ongoing discussions with the Central State Libraries (ZLB). The ZLB is exploring the possibility of partially taking over the space, transforming the property into a mixed-use facility.
Culture Senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “I am very happy that we will continue to work together at a central location for the ZLB. The most visited cultural institution in the city needs an address in the center of Berlin – at Alexanderplatz.”
Challenges Remain in ZLB Discussions
However, the Senate has indicated that the ZLB’s move-in is still subject to considerable debate. They have described the present offer as “not eligible for admission” and emphasized that “veritable negotiation steps needed” are still required to reach a definitive agreement. This suggests that while there is a desire for collaboration, significant hurdles remain in the negotiation process.
Future of Galeria Remains Debated
While the lease extension provides immediate relief, the long-term future of Galeria at Alexanderplatz is far from settled. The negotiations with the ZLB are critical, as a successful partnership could provide a sustainable model for the property, potentially blending retail with cultural functions.
The store’s history and its role as a major shopping destination for over five decades underscore its significance to Berlin. The outcome of the ongoing discussions will not only impact the employees and the store itself but also the broader commercial and cultural landscape of Alexanderplatz.
The situation highlights the evolving challenges faced by traditional department stores in an increasingly competitive retail environment, coupled with the potential for innovative solutions through public-private partnerships.
