Munich’s New and Renovated Playgrounds: A Boost for Community and Recreation
Munich, January 17, 2026 – Good news for families and sports enthusiasts in the Bavarian capital: In 2025, the Munich Building Department completed the construction of twelve new playgrounds and the comprehensive renovation of existing facilities. These initiatives aim to provide high-quality recreational spaces for all age groups, fostering community engagement and promoting outdoor activities.
Public Participation Shapes Playground Design
A significant aspect of these projects was the extensive public participation process that preceded the construction. This approach allowed future users to contribute their wishes and needs, ensuring that the redesigned spaces truly cater to the community. As a result, the new and renovated playgrounds not only offer a wide array of play equipment for children but also include specialized exercise devices for sports-minded adults.
Dr.-Ing. Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer, Head of the Building Department, emphasized the importance of these initiatives in a press release. “Playgrounds are social spaces where neighbors and families come together,” she stated. “Good recreational quality and a diverse range of play opportunities for all ages are of great importance in a growing and densely populated city like Munich, for children, families, and the community. They make free spaces and nature tangible in the community – regardless of individual abilities and financial means.”
Continued Expansion Planned for 2026
The Building Department is committed to continuing the expansion of play and sports facilities within Munich’s green areas throughout 2026. This ongoing commitment underscores the city’s dedication to enhancing urban living quality and providing accessible recreational opportunities for its residents.
