Munich, January 21, 2026 – Bavarian State Minister for Housing, Construction, and Transport, Christian Bernreiter, yesterday handed over the symbolic funding approval for the second construction phase of the U5 subway extension from the new Baumschule Laim subway station to Pasing train station to Mayor Dieter Reiter.
Significant Funding for Critical Infrastructure
The federal and state governments are providing a total of 645.2 million euros for the construction of the two additional subway stations, Am Knie and Pasing. The Free State of Bavaria is contributing ten percent of the eligible costs, while the federal government will cover 75 percent. Mayor Dieter Reiter expressed his gratitude to both the federal and state governments for the grants, emphasizing the importance of reliable funding programs for municipal infrastructure projects.
Project Scope and Construction Progress
The entire U5 extension project from Laimer Platz to Pasing spans 3.8 kilometers and is divided into two construction phases. Work is currently underway simultaneously at several locations: along Gotthardstraße and at the three future subway stations Baumschule Laim (at Willibaldstraße), Am Knie, and Pasing. Additionally, west of Willibaldstraße, the starting shaft for the tunnel boring machine, which will advance from there to Pasing, is being constructed. Parallel to this, construction work for the planned extension from Pasing to Freiham is also in progress. A preparatory measure for the future terminal station will be completed there before the second development phase of the new residential quarter begins.
Innovative Construction Methods to Minimize Disruption
The new subway stations and the section between Laimer Platz and Baumschule Laim are being built using the cut-and-cover method, which significantly reduces disruption to residents compared to an open construction pit. In the second construction phase, favorable geological and structural conditions allow for the use of a tunnel boring machine, a more efficient and less disruptive method.
Public Information and Engagement
Interested citizens can find comprehensive information about the U5 extension at the U5 Infocenter at Willibaldstraße 70. Experts from subway construction are available to answer questions and address concerns about the project every Wednesday (except on public holidays) from 3 PM to 7 PM. Further information on the construction work, techniques used, and other insights into Munich’s subway construction can also be found online at ubahnbau-muenchen.de.
The U5 extension project is a vital component of Munich’s long-term mobility strategy, aiming to enhance public transport connectivity and support the city’s growing population. This significant investment underscores the commitment of both federal and state authorities to modernizing urban infrastructure and improving the quality of life for Munich residents.
