S-Bahn Berlin: Extensive Construction and Closures Planned for 2026

Commuters and travelers using the S-Bahn Berlin network will face significant changes and restrictions throughout 2026 due to extensive construction work. These measures, detailed in an article by the ‘Berliner Zeitung’, will impact the S-Bahn, regional, and long-distance train services, requiring passengers to adjust their travel plans.

Stadtbahn to Become Major Construction Site

The Berlin Stadtbahn, a vital artery for the capital’s rail traffic, is scheduled for major renovation between June 14 and December 12, 2026. During this period, long-distance and regional trains will be rerouted or operate only on partial routes. The work will involve renewing switches, tracks, and stations.

S-Bahn Services Also Affected

The S-Bahn network will not be spared from these extensive works. Specifically, the section between Friedrichstraße and Tiergarten will experience closures on three weekends:

  • June 26-29
  • July 24-27
  • July 31-August 3

These closures are necessary for bridge work, a switch trapezoid, and joint transition constructions at the main station.

North-South Tunnel and Other Lines Face Interruptions

Further disruptions are planned for the S-Bahn’s North-South Tunnel (lines S1, S2, S25, S26) during the first three weekends of February 2026. Additionally, between Gesundbrunnen and Schönholz, S-Bahn services will be suspended from July 10 to August 17 for bridge and track work. Line S7 will also see restrictions, with the Westkreuz-Grunewald section completely closed from May 11 to May 20.

The Ringbahn between Tempelhof and Treptower Park will be closed from March 30 to April 13. In Schöneweide, work on the electronic interlocking system will lead to prolonged outages between Baumschulenweg and Altglienicke or Grünau at various times between January and August.

Regional and Long-Distance Services Also Impacted

The construction work extends beyond the S-Bahn network to regional and long-distance services:

  • RE7: Replacement services will operate between Bad Belzig and Dessau from September 19 to November 20.
  • RB60: Rail replacement services will be in effect from September 26 to December 12.
  • Berlin-Hannover High-Speed Line: Renovations from October 2 to December 12, 2026, will result in ICE connections being canceled or rerouted via Magdeburg.

2026 is set to be another challenging year for rail passengers in the capital region, marked by numerous detours and replacement buses. However, these extensive works are also a crucial step towards modernizing Berlin’s rail network.
