Berlin-Pankow, February 1, 2026 – A water main break in the Berlin district of Pankow is causing significant disruptions to public transport and road traffic. The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, February 1, 2026, has led to the closure of Greifswalder Straße and rerouting of several public transport lines.
Road Closure and Traffic Disruptions
According to the Berliner Wasserbetriebe (Berlin Waterworks), Greifswalder Straße is currently completely closed at the Höhe der Straße am Friedrichshain. The roadway has been undermined by the water, although pedestrians can still use the sidewalk.
Additionally, the Straße am Friedrichshain is closed at house number 35. Access from Greifswalder or Otto-Braun-Straße into Straße am Friedrichshain and Friedenstraße is also not possible, as confirmed by the Waterworks.
Public Transport Affected
The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) reported that the water main break is impacting tram line M4 and bus lines 142 and 200. Tram M4 and bus line 142 are being rerouted, while bus line 200 will not stop at the Mollstraße/Otto-Braun-Straße station.
Repair Efforts Underway
The water main break was discovered on Sunday morning, February 1, 2026, on a 25-centimeter supply line. Employees from the Berliner Wasserbetriebe and a construction company are currently on-site working to repair the damage. A spokesperson for the Waterworks stated that they are working on the “quickest possible solution.”
The water supply to surrounding houses is secured as no residential units are connected to the affected water line.
Uncertainty Regarding Road Reopening
Due to the current weather conditions, it is not yet possible to determine when the roadway can be fully restored, according to the Waterworks spokesperson. Efforts are focused on resolving the issue as swiftly as possible.
This incident follows other recent disruptions in Berlin’s public transport, including a near-complete shutdown due to a BVG strike and service resumptions after an ice-related chaos.
Further updates on the situation will be provided by the Berliner Wasserbetriebe and BVG as the repair work progresses.
