Berlin’s ‘Kuchel Eck’ Restaurant Closes After a Century of Operation
Berlin, February 2 – A legendary Berlin restaurant, ‘Kuchel Eck’, has closed its doors after more than a century, marking the end of an era for many patrons. However, a glimmer of hope remains for its return.
The ‘Kuchel Eck’, located at Ludwigkirchplatz in Wilmersdorf, concluded its storied history at the turn of the year. Thirty-six years ago, Melanie Tewes’ parents took over the establishment, with Melanie herself later assuming management. “I practically grew up in Kuchel Eck,” Tewes wrote on the restaurant’s website. For many regulars, it was more than just a restaurant; it was a second home, a meeting place for neighbours, and a venue for celebrations, conversations, and cherished memories.
Insolvency Leads to Closure, But a New Beginning is Possible
According to the “Tagesspiegel,” the closure followed an insolvency filing with the Charlottenburg District Court. Tewes hosted a farewell party on New Year’s Eve, an emotional moment for both guests and staff. She has not yet disclosed the exact reasons for the insolvency but announced that she would make them public in the coming weeks.
The good news, however, is that this closure may not be permanent. According to Tewes, the restaurant’s story will continue under new leadership with a “fresh concept.” Among regular guests, the name of restaurateur Josef Laggner is already circulating. Laggner operates eleven well-known restaurants in Berlin and beyond, including “Lutter & Wegner,” “Augustiner,” the “Newton Bar,” and the “Fischerhütte am Schlachtensee.”
Cautious Optimism for a Reopening
The takeover has not yet been officially confirmed by either Laggner’s corporate group or the insolvency administrator. Nevertheless, the rumour that ‘Kuchel Eck’ could reopen in approximately three months has sparked cautious optimism. This potential revival offers a ray of hope for those who will miss the traditional charm and culinary offerings of this iconic Berlin eatery.
