Pankow Promotes Cycling: New Bicycle Street to Emerge in Prenzlauer Berg
Berlin, February 11, 2026 – The district of Pankow is moving forward with its mobility transformation plans, announcing the creation of a new bicycle street in Prenzlauer Berg. By autumn 2026, Saarbrücker Straße, situated at the border of the Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg districts, will be converted into a dedicated bicycle street, integrating it into Berlin’s priority cycling network.
This development is a key part of an emerging cycling axis designed to improve safety and ease of travel for cyclists. However, unlike some other cycling initiatives, this project will not completely exclude cars. The district office has confirmed that there will be no bollards or similar barriers, and existing parking spaces along Saarbrücker Straße will be maintained. Despite this, a greater degree of order is anticipated, with additional parking facilities for bicycles and e-scooters planned for the sidewalks.
Conversion Expected Between September and November 2026
The transformation of Saarbrücker Straße is slated for completion between September and November 2026. While traffic law approvals are still pending and plan adjustments are possible, the fundamental undertaking is considered secure. The Pankow district office emphasized that this measure will enhance the safety and fluidity of bicycle traffic, underscoring Berlin’s commitment to fostering eco-friendly transportation and improving conditions for cyclists.
This initiative follows a similar project last autumn, when Schwedter Straße was designated as a bicycle street, creating a better connection between Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte. With the upcoming conversion of Saarbrücker Straße, a continuous axis will be established, offering cyclists significantly increased safety on their route between Mauerpark and Prenzlauer Allee.
New Traffic Management to Reduce Conflicts Between Cyclists and Motorists
The redesign of Saarbrücker Straße as a bicycle street does not mean the complete disappearance of cars, as residents will still be permitted to use the street. Motorized vehicles will also be able to cross the bicycle street at the Strassburger Straße intersection. Through traffic will be redirected to surrounding main roads such as Prenzlauer Allee, Schönhauser Allee, and Torstraße.
In addition to increased safety for cyclists, the conversion aims to promote environmental and climate protection. Furthermore, the new traffic management is expected to reduce conflicts between bicycle and car traffic, with bicycles having priority along the entire length of Saarbrücker Straße.
Focus on Cycling: A Complete Bicycle Zone in Arnimkiez
While the expansion of new bicycle paths in Berlin has been slow recently, bicycle streets are being implemented successively across the capital. In the western part of Arnimkiez, near the Bornholmer Straße S-Bahn station, an entire bicycle zone is currently being planned. This area, prioritizing cycling, will encompass Finnländische Straße, Ueckermünder Straße, Isländische Straße, and Norwegerstraße.
