Hamburg Boosts Green Industry with Million-Euro Funding Initiative
Hamburg, February 10 – The Hanseatic city of Hamburg is setting a clear course for a sustainable economic future with the introduction of a new million-euro funding program. The initiative, dubbed “Green Industry & Circular Economy Hamburg,” offers financial support of up to one million euros to companies and research institutions investing in climate-neutral processes, circular economy solutions, and innovative energy technologies. The program, a joint effort by the City’s Department of Environment and Energy (BUKEA) and the Investment and Development Bank of Hamburg (IFB), aims to accelerate the transition to a climate-neutral industry.
Applications for project ideas can be submitted until April 15, 2026. The ambitious goal is to establish “Made in Hamburg” as an international hallmark for climate-neutral products. The funding is primarily designed to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in investing in future-proof processes and reducing their reliance on expensive raw materials.
Attractive Conditions for Pioneers
The financial support is structured to encourage collaboration. While individual projects can receive up to 500,000 euros, cooperative projects between companies or with research partners are eligible for up to one million euros. The funding rate for companies ranges from 25 to 55 percent, while universities can receive up to 100 percent of their costs reimbursed.
Three Key Focus Areas for the Future
The initiative concentrates on three pivotal future-oriented fields:
- Innovative Industrial Processes: This area focuses on energy efficiency, emission reduction, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in production.
- Circular Economy: Projects promoting modular product design, reparability, and the utilization of secondary raw materials are prioritized.
- New Energy Technologies: Emphasis is placed on hydrogen applications, battery technologies, and CO2 capture solutions.
How Companies Can Access Funding
The application process is two-tiered. After submitting a concise project outline by April 15, successful applicants will be invited to submit a full application by July 15, 2026. For initial information, BUKEA and IFB will host a digital “Funding Breakfast” on February 24.
This initiative is an integral part of Hamburg’s strategy to combine economic strength with climate protection. It underscores the understanding that the green transformation can only be achieved through close collaboration between science and industry. This presents a significant opportunity for Hamburg-based companies to assume a pioneering role in the green industrial revolution.
