Explosive Demolition of Floodlights in Prenzlauer Berg Causes Temporary Disruption
Berlin, February 12 – Two eastern steel floodlights, dating back to 1987, at the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Sports Park in Prenzlauer Berg were successfully demolished on Thursday, February 12, at 11:00 AM. The controlled explosion, part of a larger renovation project for the sports park, caused significant noise and temporary disruptions to traffic and local residents.
Renovation Project Aims for Inclusive Sports Park
The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Sports Park is currently undergoing extensive renovation with the goal of transforming it into a public inclusion park. The Senate Department for Urban Development, Construction and Housing announced on Tuesday that the demolition of the two floodlights was a necessary step in the construction process. These specific floodlights were selected for removal, while two others, erected during the stadium’s reconstruction for Berlin’s 750th anniversary, will be preserved due to their characteristic appearance.
Controlled Explosion and Public Safety Measures
The demolition was carried out with strict safety precautions. From 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, commuters experienced restrictions affecting traffic and the M10 tram line in the vicinity of the sports park. Residents of surrounding buildings were informed in advance and advised to remain inside their apartments during the demolition.
The explosion was preceded by a series of acoustic signals: a long sound served as a warning, followed by two short sounds immediately before ignition. Three short sounds then signaled the all-clear after the explosion. In the immediate vicinity, the sound pressure reached up to 100 decibels. Authorities had warned that the sound would be a “loud, short bang,” comparable to a “nearby thunderstorm or fireworks.”
Minimal Disruption and Future Outlook
Despite the loud nature of the demolition, the process was completed without incident. The temporary disruptions were managed effectively, and normal routines resumed shortly after the all-clear signal.
