Hamburg Heritage Association Demands Preservation of Freihafenelbbrücke Sections After Ship Accident
Hamburg, February 14 – The Hamburg Heritage Association (Denkmalverein Hamburg) and The Left party (Die Linke) are advocating for the preservation and relocation of sections of the Freihafenelbbrücke. They are demanding an examination of how the partial demolition of the bridge, scheduled for this year, can be carried out as carefully as possible. The move comes after a ship accident in autumn necessitated the demolition of the bridge’s central section for safety reasons.
The Hamburg Ministry of Economics concluded the partial demolition plans after extensive review, with the Monument Authority already approving the undertaking. However, the Heritage Association warns against the complete loss of the historic structure.
Heritage Association: Historic Bridges Becoming Rare
The Hamburg Heritage Association highlights the scarcity of surviving bridges from the 1920s. Consequently, they argue that it must be investigated whether the damaged central section of the bridge can be carefully dismantled and temporarily stored. The aim is to preserve it as a historical testament at another location later on.
The Left Demands Transparency
The Left party supports this approach and demands the publication of all expert opinions that justify the demolition. This, they state, is the only way to clarify whether the demolition is truly unavoidable or if the city is merely opting for the cheapest offer.
Partial Demolition Planned After Ship Accident
Following a ship accident last autumn, it became clear that the central section of the Freihafenelbbrücke must be demolished for safety reasons. The exact nature of the damage and the full extent of the necessary demolition are central to the current debate.
The Freihafenelbbrücke, a significant structure from the 1920s, holds historical importance for Hamburg. Its partial demolition, while deemed necessary for safety, has sparked a discussion about balancing modern infrastructure needs with the preservation of historical heritage. The calls from the Heritage Association and The Left party underscore the public interest in ensuring that historical elements are not lost without careful consideration and alternative solutions.
