Car Collides with Tram in Berlin-Marzahn: Driver and Passenger Injured

Berlin, February 17 – A traffic accident occurred on Sunday evening in Berlin-Marzahn when a passenger car collided with a tram. The 78-year-old car driver and a tram passenger sustained injuries.

Details of the Collision

According to police reports, the incident took place around 5:30 PM on Sunday. The 78-year-old driver of the car was making a left turn from Allee der Kosmonauten, shortly after the Helene-Weigel-Platz tram stop, when his vehicle collided with an oncoming tram. The impact caused injuries to both the car driver and a passenger on the tram.

The car driver suffered head injuries and was transported to a hospital for inpatient treatment. A tram passenger sustained an arm injury and received outpatient medical attention. The extent of their injuries has not been further specified, but both are reported to be in stable condition.

Emergency Response and Traffic Disruptions

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance and investigate the accident. For the duration of the accident investigation, tram services in the direction of Ahrensfelde were interrupted until approximately 6:00 PM, causing minor disruptions to public transport. Police secured the accident site and initiated the necessary procedural steps.

Investigation Underway

A specialized traffic crime unit from Police Directorate 3 (East) has taken over further investigations into the cause of the collision. At this stage, it is unclear what led to the driver’s left turn into the path of the tram. Investigators will examine all circumstances, including witness statements and potential technical failures, to determine the exact sequence of events and assign responsibility.

Initial findings suggest that the car driver may have failed to yield to the tram, but this is subject to ongoing investigation. Authorities emphasize the importance of caution at intersections and when turning, especially in areas with tram traffic, to prevent such incidents.

Context of Recent Traffic Incidents in Berlin

This incident is one of several traffic-related events reported in Berlin and Brandenburg recently. On the same Sunday, an 82-year-old driver in Marzahn reportedly ran a red light, hitting two pedestrians – a 37-year-old woman and a four-year-old child. The child was hospitalized with head injuries, while the woman sustained contusions and was treated ambulantly.

Furthermore, in Berlin-Schöneberg, a 19-year-old man was shot by a masked assailant who emerged from a bush. The suspect managed to flee the scene, and police are actively investigating the incident.

These events highlight the ongoing need for vigilance and adherence to traffic rules, as well as robust public safety measures, across the city. Authorities continue to urge residents to report any suspicious activities and to exercise caution in traffic.
