Munich, February 19 – After a brief return of winter, Munich is poised for a significant temperature increase this weekend, with forecasts indicating spring-like weather. While Friday will see a final flurry of snow, temperatures are expected to rise sharply, potentially marking the end of winter.
Winter’s Last Stand: Snow and Freezing Temperatures
Munich residents have recently enjoyed periods of sunshine, even during Tuesday’s Carnival celebrations in Viktualienmarkt and the city center. However, the festivities were dampened by rain and sleet later in the evening, with temperatures hovering around two degrees Celsius, driving many indoors to nearby bars. Wednesday brought more sunshine, but snowfall is anticipated again in the evening.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued warnings for light snowfall in Munich’s surrounding districts until Thursday night. Affected areas extend to the Allgäu region, with predictions of 1 to 3 centimeters of snow. The snow line is expected to rise to 1500 meters, and icy conditions are widespread. In eastern Bavaria, the DWD has warned of heavy snowfall, with up to 40 centimeters of new snow in five districts, particularly in areas prone to snow accumulation. These districts include Freyung-Grafenau, Deggendorf, Straubing-Bogen and the city of Straubing, Regen, and Cham.
Weekend Weather Shift: Sunshine and 15 Degrees
Despite the DWD’s forecast for continued winter weather on Thursday and Friday, with sub-zero temperatures and snowfall in the state capital, the situation is expected to change dramatically over the weekend. Temperatures are predicted to rise on Saturday, accompanied by significant rainfall. By Sunday, temperatures will climb into double digits, and the coming week will see a progressive warming trend. By Wednesday, February 25, Munich is expected to bask in pure sunshine with temperatures reaching 15 degrees Celsius.
It remains to be seen whether this spring-like weather will persist and completely displace winter. The DWD will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.
