Gerhard Leinauer Faces Heart Issues After Cancer Battle, Munich Doctors Concerned
Munich, February 18 – Sports commentator Gerhard Leinauer, 62, known for his enthusiastic commentary, is facing new health challenges. After a strenuous fight against lymphoma, which included two stem cell transplants, Leinauer is now experiencing heart problems. His wife, TV presenter Alexandra Polzin (50), has been a constant support through his health struggles.
A Relentless Battle Against Cancer and New Health Concerns
Leinauer was first diagnosed with an aggressive lymphoma tumor in 2020. Following treatment, the cancer unfortunately returned in 2021, necessitating two stem cell transplants. Despite these significant health setbacks, Leinauer has consistently demonstrated resilience and a determination to pursue his passion for sports commentary.
According to a report by “Bunte” magazine, Leinauer undergoes monthly oncology check-ups at the Klinikum München-Harlaching, where he receives medication for his previous cancer. The recent heart issues came to light when he felt “extremely weak” while hiking shortly before Christmas, experiencing heart rhythm disturbances.
Munich Doctors Diagnose Atrial Flutter
Upon his request, Leinauer underwent an electrocardiogram (ECG). The results revealed typical atrial flutter. “My heart simply wasn’t beating in rhythm, and occasionally I experienced extreme palpitations,” Leinauer stated. He emphasized that, fortunately, this condition is not a direct consequence of his previous cancer. However, given his medical history, Leinauer admitted, “Of course, you immediately become anxious and scared again.”
The 62-year-old is a well-known figure in the sports world, particularly as a sports reporter and commentator. He is scheduled to cover the Winter Olympics in 2026, a role he cherishes deeply.
Unwavering Passion for Sports Commentary
Despite his ongoing health challenges, Leinauer’s dedication to his profession remains undiminished. This was evident in a recent viral video where he enthusiastically celebrated German ski jumper Philipp Raimund’s (25) gold medal victory.
“These are the moments I love as a sports commentator. Participating in the Olympic Games is the greatest thing for me too,” Leinauer enthused. He firmly declared, “Nothing would stop me from covering them,” indicating his commitment to his work, always in consultation with his doctors.
His wife, Alexandra Polzin, has been a steadfast presence throughout his health journey. “It’s stressful to see your partner suffer,” she acknowledged, highlighting the emotional toll his illness has taken on their family.
Continued Monitoring and Support
The medical team in Munich is closely monitoring Leinauer’s heart condition. While the atrial flutter is not directly linked to his past cancer, his history necessitates careful management of his overall health. Leinauer’s story is one of remarkable perseverance in the face of significant adversity, inspiring many with his unwavering spirit.
