New Day Center for Homeless Opens in Hamburg-Altona, Offering Support and Housing
Hamburg, February 26 – After two years of construction, a new day center for homeless individuals has been completed at Stresemannstraße 138 in Hamburg-Altona. The facility, which officially opens next Monday, will provide crucial support to up to 100 people daily. In addition to the day center, the upper floors of the seven-story building house 20 small, subsidized rental apartments for those transitioning from homelessness.
Daily Support for 100 Individuals
The new day center will be open seven hours a day, offering a much-needed respite from the challenging life on the streets. Spread across three floors, the facility has the capacity to serve 100 people daily. It will operate from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, including weekends and public holidays, and homeless individuals can utilize its services without any preconditions.
Comprehensive Services for Those in Need
Beyond providing a safe and warm place to rest, the center offers a range of essential services. These include meals, counseling, showers, and laundry facilities. Furthermore, individuals can establish a postal address at the center and securely store their belongings, addressing some of the most fundamental needs of the homeless population.
20 Subsidized Apartments for Long-Term Stability
The seven-story building, which fills a 550-square-meter gap on Stresemannstraße, also features 20 subsidized apartments on its upper floors. Each apartment is approximately 30 square meters in size and is reserved for tenants who have experienced homelessness or housing insecurity but have achieved sufficient stability to manage their own household. The allocation of these apartments has already commenced in collaboration with the Altona district’s specialist unit for housing emergencies.
Significant Investment in Social Infrastructure
The municipal company Fördern & Wohnen has invested nearly ten million euros in this new construction project, underscoring Hamburg’s commitment to addressing homelessness and providing comprehensive support for its vulnerable populations. This initiative builds upon existing efforts, such as the recently renovated Pik As emergency shelter, which can accommodate over 300 homeless individuals.
