Hamburg Protects Toads: Ohlsdorf Cemetery Road Closure for Amphibian Migration

Hamburg, February 26 – As temperatures rise, the annual toad migration is set to begin in Hamburg. To protect hundreds of toads from being run over, vehicle traffic through the main Ohlsdorf Cemetery will be temporarily restricted. The city’s environmental authority announced these measures to safeguard amphibians on their journey to spawning grounds.

Earlier Closure of Ohlsdorf Cemetery

The Ohlsdorf Cemetery will be closed to vehicle traffic earlier in the evenings, at 8 PM instead of 11 PM. This adjustment aims to allow nocturnal amphibians to cross the roads unharmed. The revised times will come into effect as soon as the animals begin their migration, which the city anticipates will happen soon due to increasing temperatures.

Toads, frogs, and newts travel one to two kilometers to reach their spawning waters. Many are often killed by vehicles during this journey. The Hamburg environmental authority has outlined how it plans to save hundreds of amphibian lives this year.

Construction Work Complicates Traffic Situation

The restrictions primarily affect residents with through-traffic permits. Due to ongoing construction work on Wellingsbütteler Landstraße and Wellingsbütteler Weg, these residents are currently permitted to use the cemetery as an alternative route.

According to the environmental authority, the toad migration typically lasts about four weeks. During this period, conservationists also set up amphibian fences and carry animals across roads to ensure their safety.

Controversial Amphibian Protection Fence Destroyed

In a related incident, an amphibian protection fence intended to keep frogs and toads away from the A26-Ost construction site in Hamburg-Moorburg was destroyed. The State Security is investigating whether the destruction had a political motive.
