Berlin, March 7 – Google officially inaugurated its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) center in Germany on March 5, establishing a new hub for AI innovation in Berlin. The event brought together prominent representatives from political, business, and scientific communities, including Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär, Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger, and Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner. Among the distinguished guests was Professor Fabian Theis from Helmholtz Munich and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), a Principal Investigator at the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK).

Google.org Funds Two Healthcare AI Projects Led by Fabian Theis

In conjunction with the center’s opening, Google.org’s “AI for Science Fund” selected two AI research projects involving Professor Theis for funding. These projects are part of a global initiative supporting twelve research endeavors worldwide with a total of two million U.S. dollars. The selection underscores Google’s commitment to advancing AI research and its practical applications, particularly within the healthcare sector.

Professor Theis, who heads the Computational Health Center at Helmholtz Munich and is a professor at TUM, shared scientific insights during the opening ceremony. He highlighted collaborative research initiatives between Google and the scientific community, focusing on the development of AI models for medical research. These advanced AI approaches hold the potential to simulate disease progression more accurately and enhance cancer diagnostics.

Advancing Reliable AI in Healthcare

Google.org is actively supporting several research projects focused on developing novel AI methods and promoting their safe and ethical deployment in medicine. These initiatives include research undertaken by scientists at Helmholtz Munich and TUM as part of the relAI initiative, which is dedicated to fostering reliable artificial intelligence.

One of the funded projects, titled “NextGen Health GenAI Benchmarks,” involves Professor Fabian Theis and Professor Daniel Rückert from TUM. Their collaborative effort aims to establish stringent evaluation standards for generative AI technologies in healthcare. The development of these benchmarks is crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of AI-based systems in clinical applications, thereby building trust in their integration into medical practice.

The second project, led by Fabian Theis at Helmholtz Munich, is named “Single Cell Foundation Models.” This research leverages advanced AI methodologies to gain a deeper understanding of the diversity of individual cells.
