Hapag-Lloyd Container Ship Hit by Projectile Debris in Persian Gulf

Hamburg, Germany, March 14 – A container ship belonging to the Hamburg-based shipping company Hapag-Lloyd was struck by projectile debris near the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East. The incident, which occurred on Thursday morning, resulted in a fire that was swiftly brought under control by the vessel’s crew. No injuries were reported among the 15 crew members aboard the ‘Source Blessing’.

Incident Details and Immediate Response

The ‘Source Blessing’, a vessel over 240 meters long, was anchored off the coast of the United Arab Emirates when a projectile impacted nearby. Glowing fragments from the impact struck the ship, igniting a fire in the engine room. “This is, of course, a great shock for us,” said Nils Haupt, spokesperson for Hapag-Lloyd, to NDR. “We are now investigating the damage that has occurred.” The crew’s quick actions prevented the fire from escalating, and all 15 crew members are reported to be safe and unharmed. The freighter is currently chartered to the Danish shipping company Maersk.

Escalating Tensions in the Persian Gulf

The incident highlights the increasingly volatile situation in the Persian Gulf, where tensions have been high since the outbreak of war. Iran has reportedly closed the Strait of Hormuz, leading to hundreds of ships, including six belonging to Hapag-Lloyd, being stranded in the Gulf. The German Shipowners’ Association (VDR) is advocating for military escorts for merchant ships in response to the rising attacks in the region.

Calls for Military Escort for Merchant Ships

Martin Kröger, managing director of the VDR, emphasized the critical need for protection in the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a choke point with “only one access and one way out of the sea area.” He stressed the importance of safeguarding this route if merchant ships are to resume operations in and out of the region. Kröger warned of the “serious to worrying” situation for crews, noting that approximately 30 German ships are currently operating in the region, with around 20 having been fired upon. Only one German ship, however, is known to have sustained actual damage prior to this incident.

Challenges for Civilian Seafarers in a War Zone

The current environment places civilian seafarers in a precarious position within an active war zone, with attacks occurring across the entire region. “You can imagine that the emotional situation of the seafarers is a difficult one,” said Nils Haupt. “We try to maintain a normal rhythm on board. And we give employees the opportunity to call their families via satellite.” Hapag-Lloyd freighters can remain at sea for another three to four weeks before their onboard supplies begin to dwindle.

Hamburg’s Stance on the Escalation

Hamburg’s Mayor, Peter Tschentscher, has commented on the escalation, stating that Hamburg has historically been a primary target for the Iranian regime’s Islamist activities abroad. This underscores the broader implications of the conflict for international shipping and trade.

Stranded Ships and Financial Implications

Hapag-Lloyd has a single-digit number of freighters affected by the situation. Additionally, two ships belonging to a shipping company from Buxtehude are also stranded in the Persian Gulf. The ongoing blockade and increased risks pose significant operational and financial challenges for shipping companies operating in the region.

Damage Assessment and Future Outlook

Hapag-Lloyd is currently assessing the damage to the ‘Source Blessing’. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by commercial shipping in areas of geopolitical instability. The call for military protection for merchant vessels reflects the urgent need for measures to ensure the safety of crews and the continuity of global trade routes.
