Munich Experiences Unusual Weather: Spring Delayed Despite Warmer Trend Elsewhere

Munich, March 17, 2026 – As much of Germany welcomes a return to spring-like temperatures, Munich residents are facing a continued period of unseasonably cold weather and official warnings for strong winds. This unusual weather pattern has left the Bavarian capital experiencing single-digit temperatures, a stark contrast to the warmer conditions observed in other parts of the country.

The past few weeks saw Munich enjoying pleasant, sunny weather. However, since last weekend, the city has been under the influence of cold, rainy, and unpleasant conditions. While the good news for many Germans is a rise in temperatures, the southern regions, particularly Munich, will need to exercise more patience.

Expert Describes “Very Unusual Situation”

Jan Schenk of The Weather Channel Germany described the current weather situation as “interesting.” He noted that while the north, east, and west of Germany are already experiencing a warming trend, the south remains cold with single-digit temperatures. For comparison, western Germany could see temperatures as high as 17 degrees Celsius, while Munich’s highs are expected to hover around 4 degrees Celsius.

According to Schenk, the reason for this “very, very unusual situation” is a high-pressure system bringing warm air from the west to the north and east. Conversely, cold air is moving from the east across southern Germany. He indicated that it would take a bit longer for warmer weather to return to the south, with a significant change expected only by the upcoming weekend.

Official Wind Warning and Freezing Temperatures

The German Weather Service (DWD) has also forecast single-digit temperatures for Munich. Temperatures are expected to drop to 1 degree Celsius overnight from Monday, March 16, to Tuesday, March 17. On Tuesday, temperatures will rise to 9 degrees Celsius, only to fall again to -2 degrees Celsius overnight into Wednesday, March 18.

In addition to the cold, an official wind warning has been issued for the Bavarian capital. Wind gusts of up to 60 km/h are possible from a westerly direction. The DWD advises residents to secure loose objects such as tents and covers due to the potential danger of flying light objects. The warning was in effect until 7 PM on Monday.

Hope for Warmer Days Ahead

Despite the current chilly outlook, the DWD also brings some good news for Munich. Their forecast suggests that temperatures could climb to up to 12 degrees Celsius by Wednesday. By Thursday, March 19, temperatures could even reach 14 degrees Celsius. This indicates that while Munich needs to wait a few more days, the next wave of spring weather is indeed on its way.

Munich residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather forecasts and warnings as the city navigates this transitional period between winter and spring. The patience of those longing for warmer, sunnier days will soon be rewarded.
