16-Year-Old Leonard Prescott on Standby for Bayern Munich Debut

Munich, Bavaria, Germany, March 18, 2026 – Bayern Munich faces a potential goalkeeper crisis ahead of its Champions League round of 16 second-leg clash against Atalanta tonight. With Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich sidelined, and Jonas Urbig’s fitness uncertain, 16-year-old Leonard Prescott could be thrust into the spotlight, potentially becoming the youngest goalkeeper ever to play for the Bavarian giants.

The first leg saw Bayern secure a dominant 6-1 victory, providing a comfortable cushion. However, the unexpected injury woes in goal have added an intriguing layer to what was expected to be a straightforward progression to the quarterfinals.

The Goalkeeper Conundrum

Jonas Urbig, who has been recovering from a concussion, returned to parts of team training on Monday. However, a decision on his availability for tonight’s match will be made at the last minute. Should Urbig not receive medical clearance, manager Vincent Kompany confirmed that Prescott would be the man between the posts.

“The decision will be purely medical,” Kompany stated when asked about Urbig’s potential involvement. “If everything goes normally, Jonas will be in goal. If Urbig doesn’t get the green light, there will be another solution.” Kompany explicitly named Prescott as that solution.

Who is Leonard Prescott?

Standing at an imposing 1.96 meters (approximately 6 feet 5 inches), Prescott is a formidable presence in goal despite his tender age. Born in New York City on September 23, 2009, he grew up in Berlin before joining the Bayern Campus from Union Berlin in the summer of 2023. He is considered a top talent within the club’s youth ranks.

Prescott has already made a name for himself in the Junioren-Bundesliga, where he is noted for his commanding presence, effortlessly claiming crosses, initiating attacks with precise distribution, and showcasing strong reflexes with both hands and feet. His coaches praise his athleticism and self-confidence, qualities that have seen him regularly train with the first team.

The young German-American is also a member of the German U17 national team, with six international caps to his name. He is eligible to represent both Germany and the USA at the senior level.

A Historic Opportunity

If Prescott plays against Atalanta, he will break a long-standing record. The current record for the youngest Bayern goalkeeper to feature in a competitive match is held by Sven Scheuer, who was 18 years and 242 days old when he debuted on September 13, 1989. Prescott, at just 16 years old, would significantly lower that benchmark.

Prescott was already part of Kompany’s squad for the first leg against Atalanta and was also on the bench as a backup to Sven Ulreich during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
