Hamburg, March 18 – At least 25 homeless individuals have died in Hamburg this year, according to figures released by the social welfare department in response to an inquiry from NDR 90.3. Seven of these deaths occurred in February. However, there are conflicting reports regarding the number of fatalities in January.

Discrepancies in January Figures

Police reported 18 deaths among homeless individuals in January, while the social welfare department only registered 13. Social Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer addressed the social committee on Tuesday evening, explaining that the numbers of deceased in hospitals often diverge due to varying counting methods and reporting channels.

Standardizing Data Collection

Schlotzhauer (SPD) emphasized the need for standardized data collection, stating, “We want to know who dies alone on the streets and why.” The department plans to standardize this data and publish it quarterly to gain a clearer understanding of the situation.

Public Space Fatalities Undergo Autopsy

The Institute of Legal Medicine conducts autopsies on all deaths occurring in public spaces. Of the homeless individuals who died in February, one passed away on the street, five in hospitals, and one within the winter emergency program.

Initiatives to Support the Homeless

In a related development, the “Pik As” homeless shelter has reopened its original premises after approximately three years of renovation. The facility can now accommodate over 300 homeless individuals. Additionally, new initiatives are emerging in Hamburg to create a platform that allows homeless people to record their wishes in case of death and name contacts.

These efforts underscore the city’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by its homeless population, from providing shelter to ensuring dignified treatment and accurate record-keeping.
