Munich, Bavaria, Germany – Two weeks after the municipal elections, voters across Bavaria are returning to the polls today for runoff elections. These crucial contests will decide the fate of numerous district administrators, lord mayors, and mayors in areas where no candidate secured more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round on March 8.
Key Battles Across the State
Runoff elections are taking place in 29 districts and over 250 cities and municipalities, where the top two candidates from the initial vote are now competing head-to-head. Polling stations are open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, generally in the same locations as on March 8. Voters are advised to bring their valid election notification and an identification document. Those who have lost their notification can still vote with an ID after confirming their polling station.

While city councils, municipal councils, and district assemblies have been determined, the lord mayors, mayors, and district administrators play a pivotal role as heads of administration. They often set the direction for many areas directly affecting citizens’ lives, including roads, schools, swimming pools, and various other municipal issues.
Munich Mayoral Race: A Close Contest
The capital city of Munich is witnessing a particularly tense mayoral runoff. Following a series of negative headlines leading up to the election, incumbent Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) experienced significant losses in the first round. He secured 35.6 percent of the vote, while his challenger, Dominik Krause (Greens), was not far behind with 29.5 percent. Notably, the Munich CSU, whose candidate was eliminated in the first round, has now endorsed Reiter for the runoff. However, the race remains too close to call.
Other Major Mayoral Runoffs
In Nuremberg, the runoff pits incumbent Marcus König (CSU) against SPD challenger Nasser Ahmed, with König holding a stronger position. Augsburg’s Lord Mayor Eva Weber (CSU) is facing SPD candidate Florian Freund. Despite a significant lead in the first round, runoff elections can often reset the playing field.
Other cities also present intriguing contests:
- In Erlangen, Aschaffenburg, and Hof, CSU candidates surprisingly garnered more votes than the incumbent SPD mayors in the first round.
- Conversely, in Bayreuth, the incumbent CSU mayor trailed the SPD candidate in the initial round.
- Schweinfurt, traditionally CSU-governed, saw the SPD candidate take the lead.
- In Bamberg, the Greens have high hopes for their candidate, Jonas Glüsenkamp, who is in a neck-and-neck runoff with Sebastian Niedermaier (SPD) after both surprisingly outperformed former CSU State Minister Melanie Huml (CSU) on March 8.
Key District Administrator Races
Attention is also drawn to district administrator elections, such as in the Landsberg am Lech district, where the Greens’ candidate, Daniela Groß, nearly caught up to the incumbent CSU district administrator on March 8, raising hopes for a Green victory.
In the Fürstenfeldbruck district, Green candidate Ronja von Wurmb-Seibel is challenging the long-serving CSU District Administrator and District Council President Thomas Karmasin. Karmasin, who has been in office for 30 years, secured 45 percent of the votes in the first round.
