The A7 motorway in Hamburg has been fully reopened to traffic in the early hours of Monday morning, following a complete weekend closure. The section between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld junctions, which includes the vital Elbe Tunnel, was closed from Friday evening for extensive construction work.
Construction Work Completed Without Major Traffic Disruptions
The closure, which lasted for approximately 55 hours, was implemented to facilitate several key construction activities. These included the installation of utility lines within the future Altona noise barrier tunnel, laying cables, and dismantling traffic sign gantries. Additionally, IT components were replaced and software updated in the Stellingen Tunnel, alongside planned marking work. Further construction was also carried out within the Elbe Tunnel itself.
Despite the significant closure of a major traffic artery, no widespread traffic chaos was reported in Hamburg, a testament to effective planning and motorist cooperation.
Upcoming A7 Closures Planned for 2026
This weekend’s closure is part of a larger project to expand the A7 motorway in Hamburg to eight lanes. The Altona noise barrier tunnel, stretching over two kilometres, is projected to be completed by the end of 2028. It will be the third such tunnel, following those in Schnelsen and Stellingen.
The Autobahn GmbH has announced several more full closures of the A7 for the remainder of 2026:

- May 8-11, 2026: A 55-hour full closure, with further work on the Altona tunnel lid.
- June 12-15, 2026: A 55-hour full closure, including additional work on the Altona tunnel lid.
- June 26-29, 2026: A 55-hour full closure of the Schnelsen Tunnel, without affecting the Elbe Tunnel, for integration of the Schnelsen Tunnel control centre.
- September 11-14, 2026: A 55-hour full closure, for work on the Altona tunnel lid and tunnel control centre.
- September 25-28, 2026: A 55-hour full closure, including work on the K20 elevated road.
Altona Noise Barrier Tunnel: Green Spaces and Long-Term Vision
