Historic Gloria Bell Returns to St. Katharinen Church
Hamburg, March 24 – The more than 400-year-old Gloria Bell, the deepest and heaviest historical large bell in Northern Germany, has been reinstalled in the tower of St. Katharinen Church in Hamburg. After five years of extensive repairs, the bell will ring again for Easter, much to the delight of the community.
Pastor Ulrike Murmann brought the newly arrived Gloria Bell to ring on the West Church Square on Monday, marking its official return. The bell, which weighs several tons, is a significant cultural and historical artifact for the city of Hamburg.
Five Years of Silence and Extensive Repairs
The Gloria Bell was taken out of service approximately five years ago due to a significant 1.20-meter crack. This damage necessitated its removal from the church tower for repair, a complex operation that began in August 2025.
During the removal process, the balustrade in front of the west window and the bell-floor window itself had to be dismantled to safely extract the massive bell. The six-month period of the bell’s absence was used intensively for comprehensive renovation work within the bell chamber.
Renovation of the Bell Chamber and New Wooden Bell Frame
In mid-August, the entire carillon was completely shut down. The remaining four bells were also removed and stored outside the bell chamber to allow for a thorough renovation of the bell chamber. Following this, the existing steel bell frame was replaced with an elaborately constructed wooden bell frame. This change is not only aesthetically pleasing but also contributes to the longevity and proper resonance of the bells.
Furthermore, the entire ringing system was renewed, ensuring that the Gloria Bell and its companions can function optimally for many years to come. The meticulous restoration work was carried out by specialized craftsmen, preserving the historical integrity of the bell and its surroundings.
