Hamburg’s venerable ‘Pik As’ emergency overnight shelter for homeless men is set to reopen its doors on Wednesday, March 26, 2026, following a comprehensive two-year renovation. The facility, situated on Neustädter Straße, has undergone a core refurbishment, transforming the 1913 building into a modern and improved haven for the city’s homeless population.

Extensive Renovation and Expanded Capacity

The renovation project, which cost approximately 29 million euros, has significantly upgraded the shelter’s interior while preserving its historic exterior. The ‘Pik As’ can now accommodate up to 330 individuals in two or three-bed rooms, with single rooms also available. A notable addition is the provision of 17 dedicated spaces for homeless individuals with dogs, acknowledging the vital bond between pets and their owners.

Integrated Healthcare Services

A key improvement is the integration of a specialized medical practice directly within the building. Previously housed in a courtyard pavilion, this facility is funded by the Social Authority, as emphasized by Social Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer (SPD). “This once again demonstrates that social policy is also health policy, and health policy is fundamentally social policy,” Schlotzhauer stated, highlighting the holistic approach to supporting the homeless.

33 Permanent Living Spaces for Vulnerable Individuals

In a newly constructed section, 33 so-called ‘life places’ have been established. These small, barrier-free apartments are designed for older, chronically ill men “from whom we realistically expect that they will not be able to leave the accommodation on their own in their lifetime,” according to Senator Schlotzhauer. Residents in these units will be able to live out their lives at ‘Pik As’ and receive the necessary nursing care. These permanent living spaces are scheduled to be occupied starting May 1.

Impact on Homelessness in Hamburg

The reopening of ‘Pik As’ comes at a crucial time for Hamburg, where at least 25 homeless individuals have died this year alone. The official figures from the Social Authority and the police, however, show significant discrepancies. The enhanced capacity and integrated services at ‘Pik As’ are expected to provide much-needed support and a safe environment for a vulnerable population.

Future of the Temporary Shelter

With the reopening of ‘Pik As,’ the Social Authority will no longer utilize the temporary alternative accommodation in Eiffestraße. This consolidation of services aims to streamline operations and provide a more centralized and comprehensive support system for the homeless in Hamburg.

Previous Milestones in the Renovation

The extensive renovation project had its topping-out ceremony on April 16, 2025, marking a significant step towards its completion. The project focused on creating smaller two- and three-bed rooms, improving privacy and living conditions for the residents.

The reopening of ‘Pik As’ represents a significant investment in Hamburg’s social infrastructure, demonstrating a commitment to providing dignified and comprehensive support for its homeless population.
