S-Bahn Berlin: Extensive Construction Work to Impact 2026 Services
Berlin, March 26, 2026 – Commuters and travelers using the S-Bahn Berlin network will need to prepare for significant disruptions and service changes throughout 2026. Extensive construction projects are planned across various lines, leading to numerous cancellations, diversions, and replacement services. These works aim to modernize and improve the rail infrastructure in the capital region.
Major Disruptions on the Berlin Stadtbahn
According to an article in the “Berliner Zeitung,” the Berlin Stadtbahn will become a major construction site between June 14 and December 12, 2026. During this period, long-distance and regional trains will be diverted or operate only on partial routes. The extensive work includes the renewal of switches, tracks, and stations, vital for the network’s long-term efficiency and safety.
S-Bahn Services Also Heavily Affected
The S-Bahn itself will not be spared from these comprehensive works. Specifically, the section between Friedrichstraße and Tiergarten will experience closures on three weekends:
- June 26-29
- July 24-27
- July 31-August 3
These closures are necessary for bridge repairs, work on a switch trapezoid, and the expansion joint constructions at the Hauptbahnhof (Central Station). Passengers are advised to seek alternative routes or consider using replacement bus services during these periods.
North-South Tunnel and Other Key Lines Face Closures
Further disruptions are scheduled for the North-South Tunnel of the S-Bahn (lines S1, S2, S25, S26). Traffic will be interrupted on the first three weekends of February 2026. Additionally, between Gesundbrunnen and Schönholz, no S-Bahn service will be possible from July 10 to August 17, due to bridge and track work.
The S7 line will also face restrictions, with the section between Westkreuz and Grunewald completely closed from May 11 to May 20. On the Ringbahn, services between Tempelhof and Treptower Park will be suspended from March 30 to April 13. In Schöneweide, work on the electronic interlocking system will cause prolonged outages between Baumschulenweg and Altglienicke or Grünau multiple times between January and August.
Impact on Regional and Long-Distance Traffic
The construction work extends beyond the S-Bahn to regional and long-distance services. The RE7 line will see replacement services between Bad Belzig and Dessau from September 19 to November 20. Similarly, the RB60 will have rail replacement services from September 26 to December 12.
A major project involves the renovation of the Berlin-Hannover high-speed line. From October 2 to December 12, 2026, ICE connections will be canceled or diverted via Magdeburg. This will significantly impact intercity travel to and from Berlin.
Modernizing the Rail Network for the Future
While 2026 promises to be a challenging year for rail passengers in the capital region, these extensive construction efforts are crucial for the long-term modernization and development of Berlin’s rail network. These investments aim to enhance safety, increase capacity, and improve overall service quality for years to come.
Passengers are strongly encouraged to check the latest travel information and plan their journeys well in advance using the S-Bahn Berlin and Deutsche Bahn websites or apps. Alternative transportation options, including replacement buses, will be provided where S-Bahn services are suspended.
