Alba Berlin to Construct New 15,000-Seat Arena in Adlershof for NBA Europe Aspirations
Berlin, March 26 – German basketball club Alba Berlin is reportedly planning the construction of a massive new arena in the Adlershof district of Berlin. This ambitious project is directly linked to the club’s strong desire to participate in the NBA Europe league, which is slated to commence operations in October 2027.
According to reports from the “Berliner Morgenpost,” the new facility will be an NBA-compliant arena with a seating capacity of 15,000. Alba Berlin confirmed to dpa that discussions and ideas for a new venue are underway, though specific details were not disclosed. Club Manager Marco Baldi is expected to present the plans and a feasibility study to the Sports Committee of the Berlin House of Representatives on Friday.
Berlin Senate Supports the Initiative
The Berlin Senate has expressed strong support for Alba Berlin’s endeavor. Iris Spranger (SPD), Berlin’s Sports Senator, stated, “The NBA needs a location in the sports capital Berlin – and Alba will finally have a home for professional sports and youth development.”
The Senate Department for Internal Affairs and Sport is aware that Alba Berlin is considering the construction of a multi-purpose arena on state-owned land within the Adlershof Technology Park, in connection with their NBA Europe aspirations. However, concrete plans have not yet been formally submitted to the Senate.
Adlershof: A Strategic Location for a Sports Campus
The “Morgenpost” further reported that the new arena is envisioned as the centerpiece of a comprehensive new sports campus. This campus would include a training center for both the men’s and women’s professional teams, as well as Alba Berlin’s numerous youth teams. A vacant plot of land situated between the Adlershof and Johannisthal S-Bahn stations has been identified as the preferred location.
The project, estimated to cost several hundred million euros, is reportedly set to be co-financed by an American banking consortium.
Addressing Current Venue Challenges
Alba Berlin currently plays the majority of its home games at the Uber Arena, located near Ostbahnhof and owned by the Anschutz Entertainment Group. However, the club has been actively seeking an alternative venue for some time due to high rental costs and recurring scheduling conflicts.
NBA Europe: A New Frontier for European Basketball
The North American professional basketball league, NBA, plans to launch a European offshoot in October 2027. Alba Berlin is widely considered one of the most promising candidates to secure one of the permanent spots in this new league. The development of a state-of-the-art, NBA-standard arena is a critical component of their bid to meet the league’s infrastructure requirements.
The club’s proactive approach in planning this new facility underscores its commitment to not only joining NBA Europe but also to solidifying its position as a leading basketball institution in Germany and across Europe.
The proposed sports campus in Adlershof promises to be a significant development for Berlin’s sports landscape, providing a dedicated home for Alba Berlin and potentially attracting major international basketball events to the German capital.
