Berlin, March 28 – Berlin’s scientific landscape is poised for a significant upgrade with the establishment of a new data center dedicated to supporting data-intensive research. This ambitious project is a joint initiative of the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), designed to address the escalating demands for data processing in modern scientific endeavors.
Boosting Data Processing for Advanced Research
The primary objective of the new data center is to efficiently process vast quantities of data generated in fields such as materials and energy research. Furthermore, it will serve as a crucial infrastructure for high-performance computing and AI-supported research, which are increasingly integral to scientific breakthroughs.
A joint statement from ZIB and HZB emphasized the growing need for such facilities: “Whether in materials, energy, or health research, ever-increasing amounts of data must be processed quickly, reliably, and securely. At the same time, the requirements for protecting sensitive research data and for secure IT infrastructures are rising.” This highlights the dual focus of the center: not only to handle large datasets but also to ensure their security and integrity.
Open Access for the Academic and Research Communities
The data center is designed to be a collaborative hub, built up gradually to adapt to the evolving needs of Berlin’s scientific community. Importantly, it will be accessible to other partners from the broader academic and research sectors, fostering a more integrated and resource-sharing environment.
Initially, the data center will operate from an existing ZIB building. However, long-term plans include the construction of a new, purpose-built facility in Adlershof, signaling a sustained commitment to this critical infrastructure.
Strengthening Technological Independence and Resilience
Dr. Ina Czyborra, Senator for Science, Health, and Care, underscored the importance of this development at the launch event. She stated, “Data usage and processing are essential and of ever-increasing importance, particularly in materials, health, and climate research. The data center meets this growing need while simultaneously strengthening the technological independence and resilience of our research hub.” Her remarks highlight the strategic significance of the data center in bolstering Berlin’s position as a leading research location.
The establishment of this new data center marks a pivotal step in enhancing Berlin’s research capabilities, providing scientists with the advanced tools necessary to tackle complex challenges and drive innovation across a multitude of disciplines.
