Hamburg, March 28 – The potential closure of the Catholic Groß-Sand Hospital in Wilhelmsburg is increasingly becoming a political issue. For the first time, the Archdiocese of Hamburg has publicly contradicted the Social Authority regarding the ongoing sale negotiations.
Archdiocese Breaks Silence, Points Finger at Social Authority
Previously, the archdiocese had remained silent on accusations that it was delaying the sale negotiations with the city, which intends to acquire the buildings and properties to establish a new type of district clinic as a replacement for Groß-Sand Hospital.
However, in a conversation with NDR 90.3, the archdiocese indicated that both parties had already agreed on the purchase price. It was the Social Authority, according to the archdiocese, that interrupted further negotiations in November to explore alternative locations. This statement directly contradicts previous assertions made by the Social Authority.
Social Authority Cites Confidentiality, Continues Clinic Planning
The Social Authority has declined to comment on the matter, citing the confidentiality of discussions with the archdiocese. A spokesperson for the authority stated that regardless of the outcome of the talks, the Social Authority is continuing to advance its plans for a district clinic in Wilhelmsburg.
Tensions Mount Over Groß-Sand Hospital’s Future
Recent critical statements from politicians regarding the archdiocese’s handling of Groß-Sand Hospital may have prompted the archdiocese to finally speak out. The hospital’s closure was announced by its operator, the Archdiocese of Hamburg, earlier this month, leaving the future of medical care in the district uncertain.
Previous Developments Highlight Protracted Negotiations and Community Concern
Negotiations for the purchase price of the Groß-Sand site have been described as protracted. Community concern has been high, with Wilhelmsburg residents demanding the preservation of the emergency room. A public hearing by the Health Committee on the hospital’s closure lasted over two hours, reflecting the significant public interest.
Protests against the closures have also taken place, with the gradual shutdown of the hospital beginning with the cessation of emergency room and surgical operations.
