Three Hidden Gems in Munich: Sustainable Shopping for Less
Munich is Bavaria’s shopping metropolis, attracting tourists and shoppers from all over the world. However, quality and sustainability don’t always have to come with a hefty price tag. We’ve uncovered three insider tips for affordable and eco-conscious shopping experiences in the city.
Laim: A Supermarket Completely Without Plastic Waste
Shopping plastic-free is nearly impossible in conventional supermarkets. But ‘Nebenan & Unverpackt’ in Laim offers a refreshing alternative. Located at Willibaldplatz, this store allows environmentally conscious shoppers to bring their own containers and fill them with desired goods from large reusable bins. You’ll find everything from muesli, chia seeds, and pasta to coffee beans, honey, spices, cosmetics, and cleaning products.
Customers can even grind their own flour on-site. ‘Nebenan & Unverpackt’ primarily sells organic products, many sourced from local farmers and traders. Examples include ‘Bavarian Rice’, an ancient grain from Chiemgau (8.20 Euro/kg), and balsamic vinegar (15.40 Euro per liter) from Billesberger Hof. For more information, visit nebenan-unverpackt.de.
Here You’ll Find Second-Hand Italian Fashion
Who hasn’t opened their wardrobe and felt like they have nothing to wear? If you’re looking for quality and clean second-hand clothing, ‘Seconda Pelle’ is the place to go. Italian native Francesca Pellegrini runs this shop for used Italian fashion in the Bahnwärter Thiel area. On nearly 30 square meters, she presents numerous treasures: vintage Levi’s or Wrangler jeans, leather and fur jackets, tops, colorful skirts, silk scarves, handbags, and shoes.
Everything is sourced from Italy, personally selected by Pellegrini herself. She travels to her homeland approximately every two months for this purpose. The 32-year-old hails from Reggio Emilia, near Bologna, and began selling clothes at local markets early on. “But I never thought my hobby would become my profession,” she says.
Delicious Day-Old Baked Goods at Half Price
Most Munich residents are familiar with the Rischart branch on Fraunhoferstraße. Just a stone’s throw from the Isar, this bakery is a popular spot for coffee-to-go, bread, sandwiches, and pastries. Directly opposite, at the entrance to Baaderstraße, there’s a second branch: here, day-old bread and baked goods are sold at half price. This not only saves money but also helps prevent food waste.
The goods are offered at half price. For instance, a spelt bread costs 6.35 Euro/kg (instead of 12.70 Euro/kg), a butter croissant 1.05 Euro (instead of 2.10 Euro), and a slice of Munich Cheesecake 2.60 Euro (instead of 5.20 Euro). A whole cheesecake is available for 9.50 Euro (instead of 18.95 Euro). While coffee is also available at the day-old goods store, its price remains the same as in the regular branch.
