Amanal Petros Achieves New German Record, Secures Third Place in Berlin Half Marathon
Berlin, March 29, 2026 – Amanal Petros has once again made history at the Berlin Half Marathon, finishing third with a new German record time. The 30-year-old athlete from Hannover 96 crossed the finish line in 59:22 minutes, just eleven seconds behind the winner, Andrea Kiptoo from Kenya. Kiptoo and his compatriot, pacemake r Dennis Kipkemoi, finished simultaneously.
Petros’s Strong Performance on a Challenging Course
The Berlin course has proven to be favorable for Petros. Last year, he also secured a third-place finish, setting a German record by becoming the first German runner to complete the race in under an hour, with a time of 59:31 minutes. This year, he successfully broke his own record, despite challenging conditions.
“It was tough, it was cold and very windy,” Petros stated, having aimed for a time around 59:00 minutes. “I wanted to attack the European record, but unfortunately, that didn’t work out.”
International best times were also impacted by the cool temperatures. In 2018, Kenyan Eric Kiptanui won in 58:42 minutes, and last year, Ethiopian Fotyen Tesfay reached the finish line in 63:35 minutes.
Strong Showing for German Women
In the women’s race, Likina Amebaw from Ethiopia claimed victory this year, finishing in 65:10 minutes. The 28-year-old was followed by Kenyan Diasila Jerono, who crossed the finish line eleven seconds after Amebaw. Her compatriot Veronica Loleo secured third place.
Esther Pfeiffer significantly improved her personal best, finishing fifth with a time of 67:25 minutes. Two places behind Pfeiffer, Eva Dieterich from Tübingen finished in 67:56 minutes. Domenika Mayer from Regensburg secured ninth place with a time of 68:35 minutes, making her the third German woman to achieve a top-ten finish.
The event, held in Berlin, once again showcased the competitive spirit of international and national athletes in the field of half marathon running. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the athletes delivered impressive performances, leading to new records and personal bests.
