Hamburg, March 29 – Residents in the western Hamburg districts of Othmarschen and Blankenese have reported multiple sightings of an animal believed to be a wolf over the past few days. The Environmental Authority is currently investigating these claims, though no definitive proof has yet been established.

Multiple Reports Across the Weekend

The first sighting was reported on Saturday from Falkensteiner Ufer in Blankenese and Klein Flottbeker Weg in Othmarschen. On Sunday, the police received further calls from concerned residents who claimed to have seen a wolf in the area of Schinckels Park and Römischer Garten in Blankenese.

Experts from the Environmental Authority are now working to clarify whether the animal is indeed a wolf. As of now, there is no conclusive evidence to confirm the sightings.

Emaciated Animal – Is it a Wolf or a Dog?

According to Philipp Wenzel of the Environmental Authority, the animal is reportedly emaciated and retreats when approached by walkers. Wenzel noted that areas like Blankenese do not typically constitute a wolf’s natural habitat, suggesting that it could just as easily be a dog.

The public is advised not to be afraid if they encounter the animal, but instead to make their presence known by clapping loudly or speaking. The Environmental Authority states that there have been a total of 21 confirmed wolf sightings in Hamburg since 2013. Most recently, in mid-March, a deceased wolf was found on the A25 motorway near the Curslack exit following a wildlife accident.

Federal Council Approves Wolf Hunting

The Bundestag had already approved the inclusion of the wolf in hunting law. This fundamentally changes how wolves are managed.

Previous Wolf Sightings in Southern Hamburg

In recent days, wolves have been filmed with mobile phones on the Elbdeich near Fliegenberg and in Hamburg-Rönneburg, unsettling residents in the southern parts of Hamburg.

Furthermore, two sheep in Hamburg-Marmstorf were reportedly killed by a wolf. A farmer in southern Hamburg found one sheep dead and the other had to be euthanized.
