Hamburg, April 1, 2026 – The Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier in Hafencity is celebrating its first anniversary, with General Manager Theda Mustroph reporting a positive assessment of its operations. Since its opening, the complex has attracted 12 million visitors, and 98 percent of its retail, gastronomy, and leisure spaces are now leased, according to a statement from Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier. Mustroph described the development as a “success story.” However, the opening dates for the three new hotels planned within the quarter remain undefined.
Impact on Hamburg’s City Center: Mixed Views
Julian Petrin, Hamburg’s new City Center Coordinator, suggested that the Westfield shopping center acts as a draw for people, which also benefits the broader city center. He stated that visitor numbers in the traditional city center have not generally declined and remain at a similar level to before the quarter’s opening. Petrin did note, however, that a high number of visitors does not necessarily equate to high sales.
This sentiment was echoed by Brigitte Nolte of the Handelsverband Nord (North German Retail Association). “Undoubtedly, the additional retail space in Hafencity also led to a loss of sales in the city center,” Nolte confirmed. Despite these concerns, City Development Senator Pein highlighted the enduring popularity of the city center during the presentation of the “Future Vision City Center” initiative.
