Görlitzer Park: Easter Bunnies Distribute Keys in Protest Against Closure

Berlin, April 9 – Activists disguised as Easter bunnies distributed keys to the gates of Görlitzer Park over the Easter weekend, in a creative protest against the park’s nightly closure. The action, which saw “Görli keys” handed out alongside chocolate bunnies, aimed to challenge the Senate’s decision to close the park every evening since the beginning of March.

Activists Protest Nightly Park Closure

The nightly closure of Görlitzer Park, implemented after years of dispute, is intended by the Senate to curb drug trafficking and crime within the area. However, the move has been met with opposition from various groups, including the self-proclaimed “Union of Easter Bunnies” who orchestrated the recent protest.

On Easter Sunday, two individuals wearing rabbit masks were captured in an Instagram video distributing chocolate figures, each adorned with a key. A reporter from rbb confirmed that at least one of these distributed keys successfully opened a park lock, despite reports of many locks being glued or damaged.

“Easter Bunnies” Statement on Park Access

The activists issued a statement articulating their motivation: “Easter bunnies are not enthusiastic about the new fence because it makes it difficult to hide Easter eggs. That’s why we had a surprise with us on Easter Sunday and distributed chocolate bunnies with Görli keys to park visitors so that finally all humans and animals have access to the Görli at any time.” This highlights their concern for universal and unrestricted access to the public space.

Senate Responds to Key Distribution

According to the Senate Environment Administration, which initiated the nightly closure, the current gates are not yet equipped with security locks. Petra Nelken, a spokeswoman for the administration, stated that this is why simple and replicable keys are currently in use. She further clarified that proper security locks will only be installed once the construction work is fully completed.

The incident underscores the ongoing tension between authorities and residents regarding the management and accessibility of Görlitzer Park. The park’s closure has been a contentious issue, with differing views on the most effective methods to address crime and ensure public safety while maintaining public access.

Background of the Görlitzer Park Closure

The decision to close Görlitzer Park at night came after extensive discussions and debates concerning public safety and drug-related issues. The Senate’s move in early March marked a significant step in their strategy to tackle these problems, following years of public and political pressure. The park, a popular green space in Berlin, has been a focal point for various social and urban challenges.

The distribution of keys by the “Union of Easter Bunnies” adds a new, symbolic dimension to the ongoing dialogue, drawing attention to the perceived loss of public access and the impact on the community. As construction work continues and the installation of permanent security locks is awaited, the future accessibility of Görlitzer Park remains a key point of discussion for Berlin residents and authorities alike.
