Signal Iduna Firmly Believes in Elbtower’s Continuation
Hamburg, April 10 – Signal Iduna, a prominent insurance group based in Hamburg, has reaffirmed its strong belief in the Elbtower project in Hamburg’s HafenCity. The company is set to reinvest in the high-rise building located at the Elbbrücken. Torsten Uhlig, CEO of Signal Iduna, told NDR 90,3 that the company wants to eliminate what could become an unsightly construction ruin.
Nine-Figure Investment to Avoid an Eyesore
The Signal Iduna Group is experiencing faster growth than its competitors and is generating substantial profits. A portion of these profits, reportedly a nine-figure sum, is earmarked for the completion of the Elbtower. For the new CEO, this investment is also an act of civic patriotism. “Because Hamburg needs the Elbtower to get rid of this ruin. We are a Hamburg company and naturally feel committed to the city and the region,” Uhlig stated. Signal Iduna had previously invested in the Elbtower before René Benko’s insolvency, losing several million euros.
“One Will Not Get Rich from This Project”
Uhlig expressed confidence that the new consortium, comprising Dieter Becken, Klaus-Michael Kühne, and drugstore entrepreneur Dirk Roßmann, could transform the Elbtower into a landmark for Hamburg. “One will certainly not get rich as a member of this consortium from this project,” Uhlig acknowledged. However, he emphasized that the continuation of construction is contingent on the Natural History Museum moving into the Elbtower.
Signal Iduna Not Planning to Relocate to Elbtower
Uhlig clarified that the new applicant consortium is not driven by megalomania, unlike the Austrian Benko. He views the skyscraper’s location as advantageous, particularly with the future Digital Art Museum making HafenCity a significant attraction. Despite their investment, the Signal Iduna Group has no plans to move into the tower, as they feel optimally situated in City Nord.
Hamburg Parliament Debates Elbtower’s Future
The future of the Elbtower was also a subject of debate in the Hamburg Parliament’s current session on Wednesday, alongside the issue of digital violence against women.
