Freddy Quinn’s Hamburg Villa Sold to Local Merchants, Renovation Guaranteed

Hamburg, April 16, 2026 – The villa of Schlager legend Freddy Quinn (94) near the Alster in Hamburg, which has been vacant for approximately two years, has found a new owner. The 5,000 square meter property, featuring a distinctive thatched-roof house, was sold to local Hamburg merchants, as confirmed by the responsible real estate agent from Grossmann & Berger to the German Press Agency in Hamburg. The news portal ‘t-online’ had previously reported on the sale.

Quinn’s Condition: Renovation, Not Demolition

The prolonged search for a buyer was attributed to Freddy Quinn’s explicit condition for the sale of his dilapidated house in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel: it must not be demolished. “The Quinn family only wanted to sell it to someone who would modernize it. And the buyers have been looking for exactly such a project for a long time and are very happy,” the real estate agent stated. The agent did not disclose the purchase price, but noted that “it is such that it is a good deal for all parties involved.”

A Personal Encounter with the Legend

During the notarization of the sale, the real estate agent met Quinn in person for the first time and was impressed: “He is a charming, likeable person who is still a true entertainer.”

Freddy Quinn: A Legacy in German Entertainment

Freddy Quinn is one of the most successful German-speaking entertainers of the post-war era. Discovered in a Hamburg harbor pub in the early 1950s, he rose to become one of the defining pop stars of the fifties and sixties with melancholic hits such as “Heimweh” (Homesickness), “Die Gitarre und das Meer” (The Guitar and the Sea), “Junge, komm bald wieder” (Boy, Come Back Soon), and “La Paloma.” Between 1956 and 1966, he achieved ten number-one placements in the German charts, sold over 60 million records in total, and received numerous awards, including the Federal Cross of Merit. In addition to his singing career, Quinn was also successful as a film actor, musical performer, television presenter, and circus artist. Hamburg became his adopted home for decades.

The “Sailor” Image and Retirement

In recent years, Quinn has publicly clarified several legends about his life. In his autobiography “Wie es wirklich war” (How It Really Was), published in 2025, and in accompanying interviews, he emphasized that many stories about his origins and his image as a “sailor” were deliberately constructed or exaggerated. “I would have wished that people would appreciate me as a singer and actor,” Quinn reflected in an interview. At the same time, he made it clear that he has now deliberately withdrawn from the public eye: “The artist Freddy Quinn is no longer there. I am a retiree.” He lives a secluded life with his wife Rosie in Schleswig-Holstein and views his life with gratitude, without pursuing new professional goals.
