Hamburg, April 16 – The ‘Speedweek’ initiative, featuring intensified traffic controls, began across Germany this week. Hamburg police focused on speed checks on Wednesday, particularly around schools and kindergartens, aiming to reduce accidents.

Extensive Controls Across Hamburg

The ‘Speedweek’ runs from April 13 to 19, with all German states except Saarland participating. In Hamburg, targeted controls were carried out on Wednesday, as announced by the police. Excessive speeding is cited by ADAC as the most frequent cause of accidents.

Focus on Vulnerable Areas

Large-scale speed checks like these occur approximately every six months, with the last one in Hamburg in August 2025. During ‘Speedweek’, controls are specifically conducted near schools, kindergartens, hospitals, and construction sites. Additionally, police are vigilant for speeders and tailgaters on motorways and federal roads.

During the ‘Blitzermarathon’ (speed camera marathon) in August last year, Hamburg police recorded approximately 4,500 speeding violations. More than 175 police officers were deployed for this operation.

Hamburg Leads in Speeding Fines

According to a city survey, Hamburg generates the highest revenue from speeding fines among German cities. This highlights the ongoing issue of speeding within the city limits.

Traffic Fatalities Halved in 2025

The police’s 2025 road safety report indicates a significant reduction in traffic fatalities in Hamburg. In 2025, 21 people died in road accidents, a substantial decrease from 39 fatalities in the previous year. This positive trend underscores the importance of ongoing traffic enforcement and safety initiatives.
