Drivers in the Hamburg area must brace for significant traffic disruptions until Monday morning. Due to ongoing construction work, the A7 motorway between the Hamburg-Stellingen and -Heimfeld junctions is completely closed. This closure also affects the vital Elbtunnel.

Full Closure of A7 and Elbtunnel Initiated Friday Evening

The complete closure of the A7 in both directions commenced on Friday evening at 10 PM. The affected section spans between the Hamburg-Stellingen and -Heimfeld junctions, encompassing the Elbtunnel. The closure is expected to remain in effect until Monday morning at 5 AM.

Extensive Detour Routes Implemented

During the full closure, traffic will be extensively rerouted around Hamburg via the A1, A21, and B205. For those traveling from the south, the detour begins at the Horster Dreieck, leading onto the A1 to the Bargteheide motorway junction. From there, traffic continues on the A21 to Wahlstedt and then via the B205 back to the A7 (Neumünster-Süd exit). The Autobahn GmbH Nord has confirmed that this extensive detour will be continuously signposted using LED displays.

Drivers heading to Hamburg from the south are advised to exit the A7 at Hamburg-Heimfeld and proceed via the B75 and A255 over the Elbe bridges. For those approaching from the north, the airport bypass via the B432, B433, and Alsterkrugchaussee is recommended to enter the city.

Reasons Behind the Closure: New Tunnel Control Center and Traffic Computer Update

The primary reason for this significant closure is the ongoing work related to the planned new tunnel control center and an essential update for the traffic computer within the Elbtunnel. According to Autobahn GmbH Nord, a full closure of the route is imperative for these critical operations.

Additional Bottleneck at Horster Dreieck

Compounding the current situation, the A7 is also experiencing a bottleneck at the Horster Dreieck. Until July, only one lane will be available for traffic heading into the city. This means that drivers traveling north on the A7 in Hamburg will encounter two separate traffic congestion points.

Upcoming Closures and A7 Expansion Project

The current A7 closures are part of a larger project to expand the motorway in Hamburg to eight lanes. The approximately two-kilometer-long Altona noise protection tunnel is slated for completion by the end of 2028.

Another significant closure is planned from May 9, 6 AM, to May 10, 7 PM. This coincides with the Hafengeburtstag (Harbor Birthday) weekend. During this period, the southbound carriageway between Hamburg-Stellingen and -Heimfeld will be closed, while the northbound carriageway will remain open.

Planned A7 Closures in 2026:

  • May 9 to May 10, 2026: A7 southbound closure (between Stellingen and Heimfeld).
  • June 12 to June 15, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the Altona tunnel lid).
  • June 26 to June 29, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure – without Elbtunnel (including integration of the Schnelsen tunnel control center).
  • September 11 to September 14, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the Altona tunnel lid, work on the tunnel control center).
  • September 25 to September 28, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the K20 elevated road).

Long-Term Impact: Roadworks on the A7 Continue

Between the Horster Dreieck and Thieshope, the carriageway in the direction of Hanover is undergoing fundamental renovation, which is expected to last until November. These long-term roadworks contribute to the ongoing traffic challenges in the region.

For current traffic information, including traffic jams, construction sites, and hazard warnings for Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, drivers are advised to consult local traffic reports.

The extensive expansion of the A7 in Hamburg is a major infrastructure project. NDR.de provides ongoing information about the construction project and the current traffic situation.
