A7 and Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg Fully Closed Until Monday Morning for Construction

Hamburg, April 20, 2026 – Motorists in the Hamburg area are advised to prepare for significant traffic disruptions until Monday morning. The A7 motorway between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld junctions, including the Elbe Tunnel, is fully closed in both directions due to ongoing construction work. The closure began on Friday evening at 10 PM and is scheduled to last until Monday morning at 5 AM.

Extensive Detours in Place

During the full closure, traffic will be extensively diverted around Hamburg via the A1, A21, and B205. For those approaching from the south, the detour begins at the Horster Dreieck, leading onto the A1 to the Bargteheide motorway junction. From there, traffic will continue on the A21 to Wahlstedt and then via the B205 back to the A7 (Neumünster-Süd exit). This large-scale detour will be continuously indicated by LED signage along the autobahn.

Drivers heading into Hamburg from the south are advised to leave the A7 at Hamburg-Heimfeld and use the B75 and A255 via the Elbe bridges. From the north, the airport bypass via the B432, B433, and Alsterkrugchaussee is recommended to reach the city center.

Reason for the Closure: New Tunnel Control Center and Traffic Computer Update

The primary reason for this closure is essential work related to the planned new tunnel control center and an update for the traffic computer within the Elbe Tunnel. The Autobahn GmbH Nord confirmed that a full closure of the route is necessary for these critical operations.

A7: Additional Bottleneck at Horster Dreieck

Currently, the A7 also faces an additional bottleneck at the Horster Dreieck, where only one lane is available city-bound until July. This means that drivers heading north on the A7 in Hamburg will encounter two separate traffic congestion points.

Upcoming Closures, Including During Harbor Birthday Festival

These closures are part of the broader project to expand the A7 motorway in Hamburg to eight lanes. The approximately two-kilometer-long Altona noise protection tunnel is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. Another significant closure is scheduled from May 9, 6 AM, to May 10, 7 PM – coinciding with the weekend of the Harbor Birthday festival. During this period, the southbound lanes between Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld will be closed, while the northbound lanes will remain open.

Planned A7 Closures in 2026:

  • May 9 to May 10, 2026: A7 closure southbound (between Stellingen and Heimfeld).
  • June 12 to June 15, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the Altona cover).
  • June 26 to June 29, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure – without Elbe Tunnel (including integration of the Schnelsen Tunnel control center).
  • September 11 to September 14, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the Altona cover, work on the tunnel control center).
  • September 25 to September 28, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the K20 elevated road).

Months of Disruptions: Roadworks on the A7 Have Begun

Between the Horster Dreieck and Thieshope, the road surface in the direction of Hanover is undergoing fundamental renovation, which is expected to last until November. These extensive construction activities will lead to months of ongoing traffic disruptions.

Motorists are encouraged to consult current traffic reports for northern Germany, which provide information on traffic jams, construction sites, and hazard warnings for Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The A7 expansion project is a major undertaking in the north, and NDR.de provides continuous updates on the construction and current traffic situation.
