German University Association Criticizes Deficiencies in First-Year Students
Berlin, April 22 – As Abitur examinations commence, Lambert Koch, President of the German University Association, has voiced concerns regarding the insufficient knowledge base observed in first-year university students. Koch stated in an interview with the “Münchner Merkur” that while the Abitur formally certifies students’ readiness for university, in practice, this guarantee is becoming increasingly rare.
Koch acknowledged that there are still “highly motivated and high-achieving young people who start university after their Abitur and excel from the very first semester.” However, he noted that “university lecturers are increasingly observing glaring deficiencies: in addition to inadequate mathematical prerequisites, reading comprehension, willingness to read, and general expressive abilities have noticeably deteriorated overall.”
Universities Lack Capacity for Remedial Education
Universities offer subject-specific bridging courses to address these shortcomings. “However, this remedial teaching reaches structural limits, as universities lack the capacity to permanently take on educational tasks of schools,” Koch told the newspaper. He cautioned against “generously awarded top grades” that lead to disappointment in everyday university life.
“To sustainably secure the meaningfulness of the Abitur, the progressive ‘grade inflation’ must be curbed by consistently exhausting the full spectrum of evaluation,” Koch demanded. He called for “a return to the principle of ‘quality over quantity,’ so that the Abitur nationwide once again serves as a reliable proof of actual performance.” Whether there is indeed a “grade inflation” as criticized by Koch remains a contentious issue.
