Berlin, April 23 – The German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) is commemorating its 70th anniversary today, Thursday, against a backdrop of a fundamentally altered global security landscape. A festive ceremony is planned at the headquarters of Germany’s foreign intelligence service in Berlin, where Thorsten Frei (CDU), Head of the Chancellery and responsible for intelligence services, is expected to deliver the main address. BND President Martin Jäger will also speak at the event.
BND Faces Growing Global Challenges
The BND, 70 years after its establishment on April 1, 1956, is grappling with escalating challenges due to dramatic shifts in the global situation. These include Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, which has lasted for more than four years, the crisis in the Middle East with the Iran conflict, and an increasingly aggressive China.
From “Organisation Gehlen” to a Modern Intelligence Service
The Federal Intelligence Service was founded on April 1, 1956, as the successor to the “Organisation Gehlen.” Reinhard Gehlen, a former Wehrmacht general, was responsible for intelligence on the Russian Red Army from 1942 until the end of World War II. After the war, he offered his expertise to the US armed forces.
On December 6, 1947, the “Organisation Gehlen” moved into “Camp Nikolaus,” a property in Pullach near Munich, where large parts of the BND subsequently operated for decades. In mid-1949, the US intelligence agency CIA took over supervision. The Adenauer government decided on July 11, 1955, to establish the BND. Gehlen became its first president and remained in that position until 1968. In February 2019, then-Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) officially opened the new BND headquarters in central Berlin.
