Federal Boost for Hamburg’s Sports Infrastructure: Nine Facilities to Benefit from Nearly Seven Million Euros

Hamburg, April 23 – The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag has approved nearly seven million euros in federal funding for the renovation of sports facilities in Hamburg. This significant financial injection will benefit nine sports complexes across the city, with a primary focus on energy-efficient modernizations.

The federal funds, sourced from the so-called “Sportmilliarde” and part of the special assets for infrastructure and climate neutrality, will cover approximately half of the modernization costs for these projects. Metin Hakverdi, SPD Bundestag member and a member of the Budget Committee, hailed the decision as a positive development for Hamburg and its sports clubs, stating it also provides momentum for the city’s bid to host the Olympic Games.

Nine Sports Facilities to Receive Funding

The following nine sports facilities in Hamburg are slated to receive federal support:

  • Fährstraße Sports Function Building in Wilhelmsburg: Total project cost 1,400,000 Euros, with 630,000 Euros from federal funds.
  • Kruse-Straße Artificial Turf Pitch in Bergedorf: Total project cost 581,200 Euros, with 261,540 Euros from federal funds.
  • Billstedt Sports Hall: Total project cost 1,684,000 Euros, with 757,800 Euros from federal funds.
  • Simrockstraße Artificial Turf Pitches in Altona: Total project cost 568,000 Euros, with 251,100 Euros from federal funds.
  • Borsteler Chaussee Sports Hall in Hamburg Nord: Total project cost 3,767,706 Euros, with 1,695,467 Euros from federal funds.
  • Outdoor Facility of the Buckhorn Gymnasium in Volksdorf: Total project cost 1,131,000 Euros, with 508,950 Euros from federal funds.
  • Changing Rooms of SC Condor: Total project cost 3,502,384 Euros, with 1,576,073 Euros from federal funds.
  • Barmwisch Sports Facility in Wandsbek: Total project cost 1,710,000 Euros, with 769,500 Euros from federal funds.
  • Lokstedter Steindamm Outdoor Sports Facility in Eimsbüttel: Total project cost 884,800 Euros, with 398,160 Euros from federal funds.

Focus on Energy-Efficient Renovation

The primary objective of this funding is to support projects focused on energy-efficient renovation. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve infrastructure and promote climate neutrality across Germany.

According to Finance Senator Andreas Dressel (SPD), the federal funds arrive at an opportune moment. Hamburg is already committed to investing in its sports infrastructure, and these funds will enable the city to pursue these investments with even greater impact.

Ongoing Debates on Olympic Bid

Meanwhile, discussions continue within the Hamburg City Parliament regarding a potential bid for the Olympic Games. Members of Parliament recently engaged in a heated debate on the matter during a current affairs session. A referendum on whether Hamburg should apply to host the Olympic Games is scheduled for May 31, with positions from both proponents and opponents being actively discussed.

This funding boost for sports facilities could be seen as a positive development in the context of a potential Olympic bid, demonstrating Hamburg’s commitment to modern and sustainable sports infrastructure.
